Taking viewers from the hidden corners to the incredible lives to the shocking reality that is America, these powerful, uncompromising and award-winning shows are among the most highly-rated and acclaimed programs on both HBO and Cinemax.
HBO works on a regular basis with a host of prominent documentary filmmakers, including Jon Alpert, Joe Berlinger, Nick Broomfield, Rob Epstein, Jeffrey Friedman, Liz Garbus, Rory Kennedy, Barbara Kopple, Spike Lee, Marc Levin, Albert Maysles, Alan and Susan Raymond, and Antony Thomas. Over the past several years, award-winning films have included Jean-Xavier de Lestrade's "Murder On A Sunday Morning" (Academy Award® for Best Documentary Feature, 2002), Sarah Kenochan's "Thoth," (Academy Award® for Best Documentary Short, 2002), Tracy Seratean's "Big Mama," (Academy Award® for Best Documentary Short, 2001), Arthur Cohn's "One Day in September," (Academy Award® for Best Documentary Feature, 2000), Susan Hadary and William Whiteford's "King Gimp" (Academy Award® for Best Documentary Short, 2000), "The Carpet Slaves: Stolen Children of India (Emmy® Award, 2002), Alan and Susan Raymond's "Children in War" (Emmy® Award, 2000), and Marc Levin and Daphne Pinkerson's "Thug Life in D.C." (Emmy® Award, 1999).
Most HBO documentaries are part of the America Undercover series, which focuses on contemporary American issues with strong social relevance and visceral appeal. America Undercover, which airs as a weekly series as well as monthly specials, has won virtually every major programming award, including the Emmy®, the Academy Award®, the Alfred I. DuPont-Columbia University Award and the George Foster Peabody Award. Overall, HBO and Cinemax documentaries have won 47 Emmy® Awards, 12 Academy Awards® and 17 George Foster Peabody Awards.
America Undercover productions cover a full spectrum of American life, reflected in such films as Alexandra Pelosi's "Journeys with George," Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato's "Monica In Black and White," Kate Davis' "Southern Comfort," Arnold Shapiro's "Small Town Ecstasy," Shari Cookson and Linda Otto's "Living Dolls," Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky's "Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills" and "Paradise Lost 2: Revelations," Joe Gantz and Harry Gantz' hit Emmy®-winning series "Taxicab Confessions." Many HBO documentaries are presented as part of the hit "America Undercover Sundays" series, which returns in January 2003 for a third season.
HBO also produces documentary specials that deal with important subjects outside of the America Undercover purview. Among these groundbreaking, award-winning presentations are "In Memoriam: September 11, 2001, New York City," "Cancer: Evolution to Revolution," "Half Past Autumn: The Life and Works of Gordon Parks," "One Survivor Remembers," and "The Celluloid Closet."
HBO's upcoming documentary lineup includes other provocative presentations such as "Unchained Memories: Readings from the Slave Narratives," "Naked World" and "Pandemic: Facing AIDS."
In June 1995, Cinemax launched Cinemax Reel Life, an eclectic showcase for exceptional independent documentaries. The series of original programs has attracted critical praise, as well as numerous prestigious awards for such films as Jessica Yu's "Breathing Lessons: The Life and Work of Mark O'Brien" (Academy Award® for Documentary Short Subject, 1997). In addition, Cinemax Reel Life presentations received numerous News and Documentary Emmys® in the category of Outstanding Investigative
Journalism including "The Dying Rooms" (1995), "The Selling of Innocents" (1996), "Calling the Ghosts" (1997), "Crimes of Honor" (2001) and "The Carpet Slaves: Stolen Children of India" (2002). "Children Underground" has been honored with a Special Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival (2001). Recent Cinemax documentaries include "Questioning Faith: Confessions of a Seminarian," "The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg" and Joël Soler's "Uncle Saddam."
