The January 23 fire at Chambers Street resulted in extensive damage to the signal and relay system that controls the train traffic on the A Subway Line Symbol C Subway Line Symbol lines. As a result, we are severely limited as to the number of trains that can operate safely along the line.

What's happening now

While efforts to make temporary repairs to the signal system are underway, for the next few months C Subway Line Symbol service will remain suspended (but replaced in Brooklyn by the V Subway Line Symbol between Euclid Avenue and Jay Street) and A Subway Line Symbol service will continue to experience extensive delays and crowding. We apologize for the inconvenience this situation is causing our customers.

Looking ahead

As work continues, we expect to increase the number of A Subway Line Symbol trains that we can place back into service, and perhaps bring limited C Subway Line Symbol service back. Our goal, short of being able to replace the entire network that was destroyed by the fire, is to restore enough signaling equipment to provide 60% of A Subway Line Symbol line service the first week of February. Following that, 80% of A Subway Line Symbol service should return within the next three months with full restoration of both A Subway Line Symbol and C Subway Line Symbol service within six to nine months.

If you normally use the C Subway Line Symbol in Manhattan:

  • On weekends, the A Subway Line Symbol will run local making all C Subway Line Symbol stops from Euclid Avenue up to 168 Street and continues on to 207 Street.

This weekend January 29 through 31 Brooklyn-bound A Line Subway Symbol will run on the F Line Subway Symbol from West Fourth Street to Jay Street.

Because our subway system runs 24 hours, seven days a week, planned service changes will be necessary to facilitate work to restore the signal system.
