From Queen of the Jungle to a £1m career
ANGUS HOWARTH
KERRY McFadden last night won the ITV show I’m A Celebrity ... Get Me Out Of Here!
McFadden, 23, who used to be a member of the pop group Atomic Kitten, beat the former BBC Royal correspondent, Jennie Bond.
The singer Peter Andre had earlier become the first of the three finalists to be voted out of the jungle camp in Australia.
McFadden, who had been favourite to win the final, polled the majority of the three million votes cast. More people voted in this year’s final than during the finals of the previous two series.
As she left the camp, she said she never thought she would win the show "in a million years".
She added: "I am absolutely numb. I cannot feel my legs. It feels really surreal."
McFadden was crowned Queen of the Jungle by Tara Palmer-Tomkinson, a former contestant on the show.
Ant and Dec, the presenters, also announced that the programme had raised more than £1 million for charity.
McFadden was told that her husband, Bryan, a singer with the boyband Westlife, had not been able to make it to Australia and she had to talk to him on the telephone.
However, as she began speaking, he walked on to the set.
After being evicted, Bond said: "It was such fun, with moments of utter horror. Never to be repeated, but it was such fun."
Another contestant, Lord Brocket, got down on one knee and apologised to Bond for calling her an "old slapper".
It has been estimated the winner of the programme will earn more than £1 million. But all of the contestants will be hoping to cash in with deals for interviews, photoshoots and TV appearances.
The glamour model Jordan, who was voted off at the weekend, is likely to make the most - she is being paid a reported £500,000 to tell her story of what went on in the camp.
Her appearance on the programme will also boost sales of her planned autobiography.
Every contestant will be hoping to emulate the success of Linda Barker, who appeared in the show last year. The former Changing Rooms presenter has made £2 million from her appearance on the programme.
Since leaving the jungle, she has appeared in adverts for Currys (voted among the most annoying ads of 2003), designed her own range of sofas for DFS, released a yoga video and hosted the ITV show With A Little Help From My Friends, to name but a few.
Palmer-Tomkinson, who was in the first series, is now a television presenter and signed a lucrative deal with Walkers Crisps.
