Now I'm a celebrity... get me on the Fringe

BRIAN FERGUSON

HIS star had well and truly faded when he ventured into the Australian jungle as a contestant on I’m a Celebrity . . . Get Me Out of Here!

But his appearance on the hit TV show instantly revived his pop fortunes, shooting him to number one with Mysterious Girl.

Now the song that originally launched him to stardom in 1996 will be sung to thousands of screaming fans when Peter Andre performs at the world’s biggest arts festival.

Promoters have confirmed the pin-up will be appearing at Princes Street Gardens in August as part of a series of major open-air gigs at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

His show will be part of a three-day Pop in the Gardens event which will also feature former Bros idol Matt Goss and rappers Blazin’ Squad.

The event, which will cost £40 for a three-day pass or £15 for each concert, will be part of the Arts for Life festival being staged at the Ross Bandstand throughout August.

Acts already confirmed to appear include the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Michael Ball, teenage violin virtuoso Nicola Benedetti, blues star Kelly Joe Phelps and folk veteran Martin Carthy.

Two free mini-versions of the Edinburgh Military Tattoo are also to be staged at the venue, which will host dozens of other free shows throughout August.

The Pop in the Gardens event is being held in support of the charity ChildLine Scotland, with fans being asked to make a donation on the night.

Andre is still basking in the limelight of his famous appearance in I’m A Celebrity . . . which hit the screens in February.

The pop star captivated millions of viewers with his relentless pursuit of glamour model Jordan, with the pair going on to become a couple.

Within weeks of appearing on the show, Andre’s pop career found a new lease of life - a major tour of the UK had been lined up and he even found himself invited to meet Prime Minister Tony Blair at Downing Street.

Capacities of 2500 are being set for the all-standing pop concerts, which will be screened off from the remainder of Princes Street Gardens and will run from 6.30pm to 9pm.

Promoters today predicted all three concerts would be completely sold out, but admitted Andre was likely to spark the biggest rush for tickets.

Goss, whose pop career received an Andre-style boost when he appeared on Hell’s Kitchen, will open the series of shows on Monday, August 1.

Andre, who is due to play a sell-out concert at Glasgow’s Royal Concert Hall this week, will perform the following night, while the ten-strong Blazin’ Squad, who sold out Edinburgh’s Playhouse earlier this year, will return to the Capital on August 3.

Andre said: "I’m so excited about performing at the Edinburgh Fringe. I love my Scottish fans and they are so supportive."

David Page, promoter of Pop in the Gardens, said:

"We jumped at the chance to do these shows because the venue is so good and has been pretty under-used during the Fringe in recent years. It was actually quite a surprise that these dates were available and we were very lucky to be able to get these acts to play on three consecutive nights.

"I’m expecting all three concerts to sell out as all three artists are going to have new singles out before then, although to be honest we expect Andre’s concert to sell the quickest."

Mr Page said he was hoping Andre’s show would lure girlfriend Jordan to the event.

Ian Murray, one of the organisers of Arts for Life, said:

"We hope these shows will demonstrate what kind of events we are able to host at the bandstand

."

ChildLine Scotland director Anne Houston said: "We’re delighted to be able to promote the ChildLine service through Pop in the Gardens.

"It will be a fantastic event for all pop fans."
