HUEY II helicopter, the upgraded UH-1H, visits Manila

United States Ambassador Francis Ricciardone (right), Bell Helicopter Textron Inc. Regional Marketing Manager E. James Wilson (center), and Bell Helicopter Chief Test Pilot Lynn Morgan stand before a Huey II, which flew to Manila from South Korea to give the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) a preview of a modernized Philippine military helicopter. Under a licensing agreement with the U.S. Government, Bell Helicopter will provide a team of engineers to assist the AFP in upgrading one UH-1H by December this year and transferring the skills that the AFP will need to independently upgrade its UH-1H fleet.

Lynn Morgan (right, in blue pilot uniform), Bell Helicopter’s Chief Test Pilot for the HU-1H enhancement program, explains to Ambassador Ricciardone the control panels of Huey II. The modernized Huey helicopter boasts a higher payload, increased performance and reliability, and a decreased cost of operation as compared to the original UH-1H version.

Guests try on the Huey II for room. The original HU-1H helicopter could carry only four troops, the upgraded Huey II can carry 13 troops plus a 10 percent fuel reserve. At the heart of the modernized Huey helicopter is Honeywell International’s upgraded T53 turbine, the same engine that powers the Bell Company’s Cobra helicopters. Coupled with the upgrading of HU-1H’s dynamic components and key parts, the new T53 engine gives the Huey II 28% more takeoff power and the ability to handle 291 kg more payload with essentially the same fuel consumption as the current HU-1H.
