Study Skills

There are things to be aware of... ... ...

External Distractions

Find a place where there are the least distractions. Take the phone off the hook, stay away from the lounge if there are people in there that would rather find out about all the parties happening, don't go on-line and IM ALL NIGHT.

Internal Distractions

Letting your mind wander/daydreaming can really be a major procrastination tool. Don't let yourself get used to pushing things aside for "later", set realistic goals for study time and remember your goals. Remind yourself "Why am I here?, What do I want to become?".

Physical Issues

Everyone has their own style when it comes to learning. There are those of you who must have music on when reading/studying and then there are others who must have TOTAL silence. If you feel your eyes getting heavy -Take a 30 minute power nap or go outside for fresh air - don't rely on over the counter aids or highly caffinated drinks.

Mental Issues

If you are studying a subject that is difficult for you, push it aside and go to something else for a short period. When you come back to the subject you will be more motivated to work on it and also have a sense of accomplishment for completing other tasks.

Some of us work are Visual Learners: learn through seeing; Auditory Learners: learn through listening or Kinesthetic Learners: learn through , moving, doing and touching. Find out which one you fit into and work with it.

For Assistance

  • Listen carefully in class - try and sit in the "T" zone (the first rows or the middle of the classroom)
  • take notes that you can understand and outline your readings so it makes sense to you
  • focus on what is being discussed in and out of class and if you are confused on any concepts ask questions.
  • Use study groups for courses that you are particularly stuck with. The repetition of the information and talking to others can help you remember the class materials
  • Set up an appointment to see a tutor
  • Talk with your professor during their scheduled office hours or make special arrangements

If you feel that you need someone to help you with these skills or ANYHTING else in your life during this time in your life, talk with others. For further information (click).
