The National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) is a private,
not-for-profit corporation established in 1952 to provide a
uniform date of appointment to positions in graduate medical
education (GME) in the United States. Five organizations sponsor
the NRMP:
- American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS)
- American Medical Association (AMA)
- Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC)
- American Hospital Association (AHA),
- Council of Medical Specialty Societies (CMSS)
NRMP Board Seeks Input on Second Match
The NRMP has begun to investigate the feasibility
and desirability of a two-phased Main Residency Match. A model
is being disseminated widely to residency program directors,
Match applicants, and medical school student affairs deans.
In addition, all registrants for the 2005 Match will be asked
to complete a survey to provide input to the NRMP. Read
about the second match model.
NRMP Offers Toll-Free Calling for Match Participants
Effective immediately, all Match participants
can contact the NRMP at no cost to themselves, using new toll-free
lines recently installed by the NRMP. Applicants to the Main
Residency Match should dial 1-866-617-5838. Main Match institutional
officials, residency program directors, and medical school officials
should dial 1-866-617-5837. All fellowship match participants — applicants
and program directors — should dial 1-866-617-5834. Using the
correct toll-free number will ensure that your call is routed
directly to the staff members who can assist you best. The fax
number remains unchanged: 202-828-4797.
NRMP Expands Board, Reduces Fees, Reviews Second
Match
At its October
2004 meeting, the NRMP's Board of Directors voted to expand
its membership and, for the first time, residency program directors
and residency physicians can fill designated slots. The Board
also reduced fees for matches that open after June 30, 2005,
and reviewed preliminary data from its Second Match Survey.

2005 Main Residency Match
Please visit the 2005 Main Residency Match Schedule
of Dates for more information.
International medical graduates who wish to participate in
the Main Residency Match must have passed all examinations required
for ECFMG certification by the NRMP's rank order list deadline,
which is February 23, 2005. If you must pass the USMLE Step
2 Clinical Skills, please be advised that a specific date for
reporting Step 2 CS results cannot be guaranteed by the ECFMG;
however, examinees who take Step 2 CS later than December 31,
2004, are unlikely to have results in time to participate in
the 2005 Match. Applicants should schedule the Step 2 CS as
early as possible because demand is expected to be heavy for
available testing slots.

NRMP Suspends Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Match
The NRMP has suspended the Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Match,
which is conducted as part of the Combined Musculoskeletal Matching
Program (CMMP). Only 20 percent of the 100 Orthopaedic Sports
Medicine programs agreed to participate in this year's Match,
which opened for registration on January 12, 2005 and was for
appointments beginning in July 2006. Applicants who registered
for the CMMP intending to rank only Orthopaedic Sports Medicine
programs may obtain a refund of their registration fees by sending
an email to the NRMP at nrmp@aamc.org.
Applicants who are seeking positions in Hand Surgery still can
participate in the CMMP.

site for the latest dates and participating subspecialties.
