ATI Multimedia Channel (AMC)

Introduction

The ATI Multimedia Channel (AMC) is an expansion bus which allows external devices to be attached directly to an ATI graphics controller.

The ATI-TV ISA, ATI-TV PCI, and ATI-TVfm are examples of AMC peripheral devices which can be attached to an AMC-equipped ATI graphics adapter.

Discontinued in 1999

ATI began shipping graphics products with AMC expansion connectors beginning with the VIDEO XPRESSION in 1996.

Most graphics boards in the following families included (or "optionally included") an AMC connector:
  • mach64 VT
  • RAGE I
  • RAGE II/II+
  • RAGE PRO
  • RAGE LT PRO
The last product with an AMC connector was an early version of the RAGE FURY, produced at the beginning of 1999.

The AMC connector has since been discontinued (as of early 1999) and is no longer offered on any current ATI graphics products.

AMC Ribbon Cable

Both the graphics adapter and the AMC peripheral device must have an AMC connector. The two AMC connectors are connected using a ribbon cable.

An AMC connector consists of a 40 pin male header, with three pins missing.

A keyed AMC cable is used to connect one AMC device to another. Replacement AMC cables are available for purchase from ATI Technical Support.

An AMC cable is required to connect AMC devices.

DO NOT use a 40 pin IDE drive cable to connect AMC devices. An AMC cable has a set of blocked "key pins" which restrict the orientation of the cable on the connector. These safeguards are not present on a standard IDE cable. Incorrect connections can cause severe damage to the AMC peripheral and the graphics adapter. Also, a 40 pin IDE cable will typically exceed the recommended cable length (up to 10") and may cause random errors to occur.

Products using AMC connectors:*
  • VIDEO XPRESSION
  • VIDEO XPRESSION+
  • 3D XPRESSION
  • 3D XPRESSION+
  • 3D XPRESSION+ PC2TV
  • 3D PRO TURBO
  • 3D PRO TURBO PC2TV
  • XPERT@PLAY
  • XPERT@PLAY 98
  • XPERT@WORK
  • RAGE FURY

* Note: Certain revisions of these products may not offer an AMC connector.

VESA Feature Connector (VFC)

One portion of the AMC connector (26 pins) has a pinout compatible with the VESA Feature Connector (VFC) standard. This portion of the AMC connector can be used to  connect VFC peripherals (e.g. some video overlay boards) to the ATI graphics system.

Video Input Port (VIP)

Some RAGE 128 products use a Video Input Port (VIP) connector rather than an AMC connector. The VIP connector serves the same basic function, however; a special adapter cable is required to connect an AMC device such as the ATI-TV ISA/PCI/fm.

Products using VIP connectors:*
  • XPERT 99
  • XPERT 128
  • RAGE MAGNUM

* Note: Certain revisions of these products may not offer a VIP connector.
