What is Search Inside the Book?

A significant extension of our groundbreaking Look Inside the Book feature, Search Inside the Book allows you to search millions of pages to find exactly the book you want to buy. It's like browsing a gigantic bookstore with millions of searchable pages right at your fingertips. Looking for investment advice? Think of a relevant phrase like finding a stockbroker, enter it in the search box, and click the GO! button to get a list of search results, including excerpts from books containing the words you searched for. Click on one of the excerpts to see the full page from the book you selected. For more on how to use the Search Inside the Book feature, visit our How It Works page.

What do I do if I'm a publisher or an author who wants to add my book to the Search Inside the Book program?

Please visit our Publishers' Resource Guide, which will tell you more about how Search Inside the Book works and how to sign up.

How do I use Search Inside the Book?

We've incorporated this new feature into the search functionality you've always used at Amazon.com. But now your results won't just display books that have your search terms in their title, the author's name, or the keywords provided by the publisher--you'll also see books that contain your search phrase within their text.

How can I find a specific book?

If you are searching for an exact author name, title, or phrase, you might try putting the words between double quotes (e.g. "The Da Vinci Code") when entering them into the search field. This should help narrow down your results.

What will I see when I use Search Inside the Book?

After entering a word or phrase in the search box and clicking the GO! button, you'll get a list of search results. Below some of the search results, you'll see a book excerpt with your search terms highlighted, which indicates that the book's text is searchable. You can either click to see a list of all references to the term in that particular book or click on the excerpt's page number to read the entire page on which the excerpt appears. Once you're on a reader page, you can browse forward or back two pages within the book, or you can search the book for other terms. For an illustrated example of what you'll see using our Search Inside the Book feature, visit our How It Works page.

Will the pages in the physical book look exactly like the pages I see online?

We created the images that you see in this feature by scanning pages from actual books, so in a way, that's exactly what the book will look like. Keep in mind, however, that the images you see are optimized for viewing on a computer monitor; printed pages are usually a much higher resolution and quality. Also keep in mind that, in some cases, pages or parts of pages will be omitted from Search Inside the Book because of special requests from the publisher, or because of copyright restrictions. Also, if we offer both a paperback and hardcover edition of a book, we typically scan only one version and share the page images for both books, since the text is otherwise identical. If this is the case, we will indicate the version of the book that the text comes from.

Why do I need to sign in or register as an Amazon.com customer to view pages?

We developed Search Inside the Book to help customers find the perfect book to buy. It's also very important that we protect the copyrighted material of publishers and authors who have agreed to participate in this feature. By monitoring the feature's use, we're able to provide both the customer and the copyright holder with a positive experience. If you are a recognized, registered customer, you should not have to sign in to view pages. If you are not, we require that you to sign in or set up an account with us before viewing pages.

Why do I need to enter a credit card number?

We require credit card information for security purposes only. We will not charge your credit card account any fees for using the Search Inside the Book feature.

Why won't Search Inside the Book let me see more pages from a specific book?

Our Search Inside the Book feature is designed to help our customers discover new books and ensure that they'll be satisfied with their purchases. To be fair to the publishers and authors who participate in our program, we only allow Search Inside the Book users to read a portion of the book.

Why aren't there any Search Inside the Book matches for my term?

Our Search Inside the Book feature includes only books for which we have the publisher's permission to display copyrighted material. If the book you want is not available for you to search inside today, we may have it soon, so keep checking back. In the meantime, we can help you discover hundreds of other books on virtually any subject.

Will you be adding more books to the Search Inside the Book feature?

We plan to widely expand our Search Inside the Book offering and continue to make more books available to you.
