WHEN I SAID I WANTED TO BE YOUR DOG
JENS LEKMAN
(SONIC UNYON) Rating:
NNNN
|
Swedish indie troubadour Jens Lekman's view of the world has obviously been shaped by 60s pop songs. He wears his influences on his vintage Polo sleeve, name-dropping Bacharach and David, quoting Iggy, crooning in the hushed tones of Paul Simon and crafting blissful ballads that alternate between fragile acoustic fingerpicking and the soaring Brill Building anthems. It'd all be a lovely retro retread, but Lekman twists his lyrics into self-conscious meta-narratives. When he sings about wanting to be someone's dog, it's only cuz he wants to lick her face; he warbles about batty Psychogirls with the wistfulness of Dionne Warwick wishin' and hopin'. He knows the real world will never live up to the idealized version of top-40 love, but he keeps putting the LP on repeat.
