Welcome to the Motley Fool
Welcome to the Fool

What is The Motley Fool? -- Headquartered in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia, The Motley Fool was founded in 1993 by brothers David and Tom Gardner. Our name derives from Elizabethan drama where only the court Jester (the "Fool") could tell the King the truth without getting his head lopped off. For more than five years, we've been dedicated to educating, amusing, and enriching individuals in search of the truth.

"Those who understand compound interest are destined to collect it. Those who don't are doomed to pay it."

What is the truth? -- The stark truth is that the financial world preys on ignorance and fear. Few schools teach personal finance and investing. As a result, most folks grow up afraid to admit that they don't understand how to do things like invest in the stock market, buy a house, buy a car, and handle their credit cards responsibly. True, none of these topics are great mysteries, but, without a proper education, all of them can be intimidating and confusing.

But now, gentle reader, you've set your virtual feet on Foolish soil and your days of fear and intimidation are over. We exist to serve you, to teach you, and to have a heck of a lot of fun along the way. We believe that:

  1. You are the most capable person alive to manage your money.
  2. This stuff isn't rocket science; we all just need to learn together.
  3. Being smart about your money can be a lot of fun... really!
  4. You can make a fortune doing it.
