FAQ:
The Sexual Homicide Exchange
Q:
What exactly does SHE do?
A:SHE investigates and profiles cold case
homicides for law enforcement and families of murder victims. We also
train law enforcement and advocate for changes in criminal investigative
methods and laws.
Q: Does SHE charge for their services?
A:There is never any charge for our investigative
or profiling services. SHE gets the money for its pro bono work through
police training, grants, and donations.
Q:How does SHE select which cases it works?
A: All incoming cases are handled in order
received. We do not “pick” cases because they are more “interesting”,
or because the victim’s family is wealthy or because the case would
be good for publicity. The only criteria for working on a case is
that SHE can make a difference to the pursuit of justice in that case
or that SHE can at least provide an answer to the family that will
be beneficial to their healing process.
Q: Does SHE only work on sexual homicide cases?
A: No, SHE actually will work on any homicide
case regardless of the motive. It is also important to note that sometimes
what seems a sexual homicide turns out to be something entirely different
and what seems to be a suicide or a hit or a drug deal gone bad can
turn out to be a sexual homicide.
Q: SHE also does Equivocal Death Analyses. What are those?
A: Whenever we take on a new case, we first
have to determine the actual cause of death and the manner of death.
What looks like a suicide may actually be a homicide and what looks
like a homicide may actually be a suicide or an accident. A change
of manner of death may launch a police investigation into homicide
or help a family understand that their loved one was not murdered
after all.
Q: Are the folks at SHE armchair profilers?
A: Although a lot of profiling is done in the office,
we actually go out into the field to investigate the crimes and talk to
witnesses and suspects. Sometimes it is impossible to solve a crime at
a distance and with the information provided by past criminal investigation,
and only by going back into the field can new answers and insights be
gained.
