Required materials are 1 ounce yellow and 1 ounce black Coats and Clark's 4 ply knit and crochet yarn (available in 3 1/2 ounce skeins) and 1/2 ounce each of white and eggshell; size G crochet hook or size required to obtain given gauge; polyester fiberfill; small baby food jar; white glue; 2 small novelty eyes; 4 small artificial flowers; scrap of red felt for tongue; 1/2 inch diameter black pompom for nose.

Gauge: 7 sc equal 2 inches. 4 rnds equal 1 inch.

TO SAVE TIME, TAKE TIME TO CHECK GAUGE.

HEAD:

Starting at top of head with black, ch 4, join with sl st to form ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 1, work 8 sc in ring, join with sl st to first sc.

Rnd 2: Ch 1, work 2 sc in joining and in each sc around - 16 sc. Join.

Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in joining, (2 sc in next sc, sc in next 2 sc) 5 times - 21 sc. Join.

Rnds 4, 5: Ch 1, sc in joining and in each sc around. Join.

Rnd 6: Ch 1, sc in joining, sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc, (sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc) 6 times - 28 sc. Join.

Rnd 7: Repeat Rnd 4.

Rnd 8: Ch 1, sc in joining, sc in next sc; draw up lp in each of next 2 sc, yo and draw through all 3 lps on hook (dec made); (sc in next 2 sc, dec over next 2 sc) 6 times - 21 sc. Join.

Rnd 9: Ch 1, sc in joining, dec over next 2 sc, (sc in next sc, dec over next 2 sc) 6 times - 14 sc. Join.

Rnd 10: Ch 1, dec over joining and next sc, (sc in next sc, dec over next 2 sc) 4 times - 9 sc. Join.

Rnd 11: Ch 1, work 2 sc in each sc around. Drop black, with yellow sl st in first sc to join. Fasten off black.

Rnd 12: With yellow, ch 1, sc in joining and in each sc around. Join.

Rnd 13: Ch 2, 2 hdc in next sc, (hdc in next sc, 2 hdc in next sc) 8 times - 27 hdc. Join.

Rnd 14: Ch 1, sc in joining and in each hdc around - 27 sc. Join. Fasten off.

Ear: (Make 2) Front Section: With white, ch 10.

Rnd 1: Sl st in 2nd ch from hook and in next 2 ch, sc in next 3 ch, hdc in next 3 ch, ch 2; working along opposite side of starting chain hdc in next 3 ch, sc in next 3 ch, sl st in last 3 ch. Mark last st for tip of ear. Join with sl st to first sl st. Fasten off.

Back Section: With black work same as for front section, do not join, do not fasten off. Ch 1, turn. Holding back and front sections together, with front section facing and working through both sections, sc in joining and in next 9 sts, 2 sc in each of next 2 sts, sc in next 9 sts. Join. Fasten off. Sew ears to top of head as shown Ch 1, turn. Fasten off.

Eyes: Glue novelty eyes in place or embroider eyes.

POMPOM for CHEEKS: (Make 2) Cut 2 circles of cardboard each 1 inch in diameter. Cut hole 1/2 inch in diameter in center of each piece. Cut 3 strands eggshell each 2 yards long. Place cardboard circles together and holding strands together, wind strands around the double circles drawing yarn through center opening and over edge until center hole is filled. Cut yarn around outer edge between the circles. Double a 1/2 yard length of eggshell, slip between the 2 cardboard circles and tie securely around strands of pompom. Remove cardboard. Trim pompom.

Sew cheek pompoms and tiny black pompom for nose in place as shown. Cut a 1/4 x 3/8 inch piece of red felt for tongue, round off one of the short edges, glue in place below cheeks.

COAT- With right side of head facing, sk first 14 sc on last rnd, join yellow to next sc.

Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc in front lp of each sc around. Join. Ch 1, turn. Now work lower front of coat in rows as follows:

Row 1: SC in next 8 sc, 2 sc in next sc, (sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc) twice; sc in next 8 sc - 30 sc. Ch 1, turn.

Row 2: Work 2 sc in first sc, sc in next 28 sc, 2 sc in last sc - 32 sc. Ch 1, turn.

Row 3: SC in first 10 sc, (2 sc in next sc, sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc) twice; sc in last 10 sc - 36 sc. Ch 1, turn.

Row 4: SC in first 9 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 16'sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in last 9 sc - 38 sc. Ch 1, do not turn.

Row 5: Working 2 sc in each front corner, sc evenly around entire lower edge including front openings. Join to first sc. Fasten off.

Hood:

With yellow, ch 25.

Row 1: SC in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across - 24 sc. Ch 1, turn.

Rows 2 through 8: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. Now work first upper section of hood in short rows as follows:

Row 1: Sc in first 7 sc; do not work over remaining sts. Ch 1, turn.

Rows 2 through 5: sc in each sc across 7 sc. Ch 1, turn. At end of Row 5, fasten off. Work second section as follows: Sk next 10 sc on last long row worked, join yellow to next sc, ch 1, sc in joining and in next 6 sc - 7 sc. Ch 1, turn. Complete as for first upper section.

Sew Row 5 of each upper section together to form top seam of hood. Sew inner side edges of upper sections to the skipped sts on last row worked for a seam across back of hood.

Hood Ties and Edging: With yellow, ch 30. Join with Sl St to a front corner of hood, Sl St across front edge of hood to next corner, ch 30. Fasten off. Knot end of each tie. Sew neck edge of hood to Rnd 12 of head, centering opening on hood with front opening of coat. Make a bow with ties.

Arm: (Make 2) With yellow, ch 2.

Rnd 1: Work 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Join to first sc.

Rnds 2 through 8: Ch 1, sc in joining and in each sc around - 6 sc. Join.

Rnd 9: Ch 3, work 2 dc in front lp of next sc, (dc in front lp of next sc, 2 dc in front lp of next sc) twice. Join to top of ch-3. Fasten off. Fold last md worked to form cuff.

Work hand as follows: With black, ch 4. Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and in next 2 ch - 3 sc. Ch 1, turn.

Rows 2, 3: sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn.

Row 4: Sk first sc, sc in next 2 sc. Ch 1, turn.

Row 5: Sk first sc, sc in next sc, Sl St in end St of Row 3. Fasten off.

Sew hands into arm opening at cuff end. Sew arms in place on coat as shown. Sew artificial flowers in one hand.

BODY - With black, ch 8. Join with Sl St to form ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 3, work 23 dc in ring - 24 dc counting ch-3 as 1 dc. Join to top of ch-3.

Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in joining and in each dc around - 24 sc. Join to first sc.

Rnds 3 through 11: Ch 1, sc in joining and in next 6 sc; draw up lp in next sc, drop black, with white yo and draw through all lps on hook (sc color change made); carry dropped color along top of last row worked and work sts over it to conceal; sc in next 7 sc, make a color change in next sc as before changing to black, sc in next 8 sc - 24 sc. Join.

Rnd 12: Sl St in first 8 sc, drop black, with white Sl St in next 8 sc, drop white, with black Sl St in last 8 sc. Join to first Sl St. Fasten off each color. Apply glue to bottom and sides of jar; insert jar in body leaving the threads for screw cap on upper jar free.

First Leg: With black, ch 2.

Rnd 1: Work 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Join.

Rnd 2: Work 2 sc in joining and each sc around - 12 sc. Join.

Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in joining, 2 sc in next sc(sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc) 5 times - 18 sc. Join.

Rnd 4: Ch 1, sc in joining and in each sc around. Join. Do not fasten off.

Work rows as follows:

Row 1: Ch 6, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in next 4 ch, sc in next 4 sc on Rnd 4 of leg - 9 sc. Ch 1, turn.

Rows 2 through 5: sc in each sc across - 9 sc. Ch 1, turn. At end of Row 5, fasten off leaving 12 inch length for sewing. Fold last 5 rows in half having first and fifth row together, sew the 9 Sts together; sew front end closed. Stuff leg and sew in place as shown.

Second Leg: With black, ch 2. Repeat Rnds 1 through 4 of first leg. Turn, complete as for first leg.

Tail:

Pompom: Cut 2 pieces of cardboard each 2 inches in diameter. Cut hole 3/4 inch in diameter in center of each piece. Cut 3 strands of black each 6 yards long. Place cardboard circles together and holding 3 strands together wind the strands around the double circles and complete pompom as before. Sew tail in place. Stuff head firmly and glue head and coat section to jar being careful to have coat opening centered over the front white area of body.
