Autobahn

One night, aged fourteen, I was staying over at Big Mac's house. His older brother played guitar in a band. He had a big amplifer. We plugged the record player into the amp and played Kraftwerk's Autobahn very loudly through the speaker. Life could surely get no better than this ? We jumped around without any clothes on. We had discovered something - electronic music.

What is music ?

Music is the arrangement of sounds in order to create form and perhaps evoke an emotional response.

I feel love

Once on TV I caught a glimpse of Giorgio Moroder talking about making the song I feel love. He used a step sequencer to play 8s on the synth - c8 c g b (I am using Lilypond notation). Whilst the loop was playing Georgio switched on a delay. By chance, it happened to be set to playback 16s. We now have c16 c c c g g b b. When Donna Summer came in to sing the vocal it was in the wrong key so she had to sing falsetto. Result - the definitive electronic disco master piece.

In an interview Matthew Herbert was asked what he would of done if he had not become a musician when he grew up; he replied that he would probably have copied the bass line to I feel love.

Brian Eno said look carefully at your mistakes - they may show you your hidden intentions.

Hit me with your Rythm Stick

I love this song by Ian Dury and the Rhythm Sticks. I used to love wearing a blond wig and singing hit me, hit me thru' my Korg VC10 Vocoder ad infinitum. I have since been forced to eat (footnote #1) my vocoder. However, two of my remixes survive. Here is one of them: Hit Me (the Hancock mix).
