Summary

New orders for manufactured goods in December, up seven of the last eight months, increased $1.0 billion or 0.3 percent to $379.1 billion, the Department of Commerce, Census Bureau reported today. This was at the highest level since the series was first stated on a NAICS basis in 1992 and followed a 1.4 percent November increase. Shipments, up seven of the last eight months, increased $3.5 billion or 0.9 percent to $382.7 billion. This was also at the highest level since the series began in 1992 and followed a 0.4 percent November increase. Unfilled orders, up sixteen of the last seventeen months, increased $3.4 billion or 0.6 percent to $552.6 billion. This was also at the highest level since the series began in 1992 and followed a 1.1 percent November increase. Inventories, down following twelve consecutive increases, decreased $0.3 billion or 0.1 percent. This followed a 1.0 percent November increase to $470.6 billion.

New Orders

New orders for manufactured durable goods in December increased $2.2 billion or 1.1 percent to $201.6 billion, revised from the previously published $1.2 billion increase.

New orders for manufactured nondurable goods decreased $1.1 billion or 0.6 percent to $177.5 billion.

Shipments

Shipments of manufactured durable goods in December increased $4.7 billion or 2.3 percent to $205.2 billion, revised from the previously published $4.2 billion increase.

Shipments of manufactured nondurable goods decreased $1.1 billion or 0.6 percent to $177.5 billion.

Unfilled Orders

Unfilled orders of manufactured durable goods in December, up sixteen of the last seventeen months, increased $3.4 billion or 0.6 percent to $552.6 billion, revised from the previously published $2.8 billion increase.

Inventories

Inventories of manufactured durable goods in December, down following twelve consecutive increases, decreased $0.3 billion or 0.1 percent to $282.3 billion, revised from the previously published $0.1 billion decrease.

Inventories of manufactured nondurable goods, down following two consecutive increases, decreased slightly to $188.2 billion.

By stage of fabrication, December materials and supplies decreased 0.3 percent in durable goods and 0.5 percent in nondurable goods. Work in process decreased 0.3 percent in durable goods and increased 0.2 percent in nondurable goods. Finished goods increased 0.4 percent in durable goods and 0.2 percent in nondurable goods.
