T O D A Y ' S   H E A D L I N E S
March 11, 2005
It's March ... it's madness
Between UK, the University of Cincinnati, Xavier, Indiana University, the University of Louisville, University of Dayton, Miami University and Ohio State, our region is arguably the best in the country for college basketball. And we know it.

A new era for public radio
In a mini-deal reminiscent of the commercial radio station consolidations that have taken place the last 10 years, WGUC-FM (90.9) announced it is purchasing WVXU-FM (91.7) and the seven stations in its X-Star network, which extends from Ohio to Indiana and Michigan, for $15 million. The move, unveiled Friday, brings two of the area's legendary stations under one nonprofit ownership group.

Difficult decisions on abuse claims
As a devout Catholic, it was tough for retired Hamilton County Common Pleas Judge Thomas Nurre to hear the horror of sex abuse on minors by employees of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. It was tough for Matt Garretson to share the hurt suffered by the victims of priest abuse. Both sat in judgment of what kind of abuse for each victim was worth money when the compensation checks were mailed this week to more than 100 abuse victims.

Stakes are high as teens take new SAT
A year of college tuition costs more than $5,000 at a public school and more than $20,000 at a private college. So to say the stakes are high when the class of 2006 sits down for the new, tougher Scholastic Aptitude Test is to say the obvious. It's no surprise, then, that the tri-state's high school juniors have been drilling for this day for months.
