Many of you are aware that, in addition to getting Textpattern 1.0 ready for release, I’ve been working on setting up a webhosting service called TextDrive.

At the outset this service was designed to be the best possible host for Textpattern (indeed for all PHP/MySQL software), but has blossomed into something more: a webhost that offers the best in performance, security and stability, backed by intelligent configuration and great software.

It kicks all kinds of ass.

Now, I’ve been talking in recent weeks with piqued, twitchy venture capital people about TextDrive’s startup, and through that it’s become abundantly clear that VC is not the way to go. Startup funding is required, but not at that price.

The best scenario I can imagine is one that sees TextDrive break even (be profitable, actually) on day 1 of operation, funded only by customers. This is achievable by way of a very sweet ‘Members Circle’ offer, one which gives Textpattern users an opportunity to acquire a piece of TextDrive at its inception, and to benefit from its future success in perpetuity:

Buy a year of TextDrive now, and, hosting-wise, you’re set for life.

What you get for US $199:

  • 12 months of incredibly good hosting (see below) with the top TextDrive package (1gig storage, 10gigs bandwidth, 10 domains)
  • After 12 months you get the same hosting package free of charge for as long as TextDrive exists
  • 50% discount on future Textpattern corporate licenses
  • A Textpattern t-shirt!
  • For those who trade: 10 pre-stock-split blogshares in Textpattern.com.

Starting June 1st, you’ll receive the keys to your new server.

Some TextDrive Specs

  • Server Hardware and Operating System
    • Dual and Quad Xeon Processor Dell Servers
    • Hardware RAID5-arrayed hot-swap SCSI (Ultra360; 10K rpm) drives
    • Live, syncronized backups to server-attached SCSI RAID arrays
    • 4-8 GB RAM per server
    • Space is undersold and servers are kept at < 85% capacity, generally with 20-40 GB un-reserved space. Soft quotas are enabled but we won’t charge if you temporarily go over.
    • FreeBSD optimized at the kernel level for Apache, PHP and MySQL
  • Network and Security
    • 10-provider meshed network
    • 100Mbps connections
    • 100% SLA uptime agreement
    • Up to 98% web bandwidth compression (get 50-100x more out of your bandwidth)
    • We pre-pay for bandwidth and only charge for overages in the unlikely case that an entire server goes over.
    • Mitigation of Distributed Denial of Service (DDS) attacks
    • 24/7 monitoring at the service, system and process-levels
    • Intrusion detection system and file-integrity checking
    • Prevention of XSS, MySQL-injection and other attacks.
    • Blocking of spambots, harvesters and robots

Interesting…

1) Its its $199US for life??

2) I can run plain HTML pages right? I mean, with TextDrive, I dont have to use Textpattern right? Or do I? I ask this because for me at least, i twill take some time to convert all my html pages to Textpattern.

3) What about domain transfers?

4) And FTP?

5) How is the web interface? How much control does the user have? If I want to add a sub-domain, can I do it on the web interface or do I have email for support?

One clarification. Does “prorated” mean that you will be billing the “Members Circle” the full $199 up front, or ~ $16.58 on the first of the month for the next 12 months?

I’m self-hosting for now, and while this is an amazing deal (Upgrades! T-Shirt! WebDAV! 1 GB/mailbox!) I don’t have $199 to spend right now.

Is email space and webspace different things? I.e. 1 gig for webspace and 1 gig for email?

That’s right. There are 200 on offer.

> 2) I can run plain HTML pages right? I mean, with TextDrive, I dont have to use Textpattern right? Or do I? I ask this because for me at least, i twill take some time to convert all my html pages to Textpattern.

Of course. You can run WordPress if you like (if you do, we’ll donate 10% to the WP development fund)

> 3) What about domain transfers?

It’s up to you to point to TextDrive DNS.

> 4) And FTP?

SFTP, yes.

> 5) How is the web interface? How much control does the user have? If I want to add a sub-domain, can I do it on the web interface or do I have email for support?

Some very slick Txp-compatible control panel stuff coming together yet. I won’t promise anything yet, but it should prove very powerful.

Count me in Dean. I mean, reserve for me one of these offers. This is a much better deal than what I have at the moment and much cheaper.

$199 up front for this offer. For those who sign up in the future, their first month’s billing will be prorated to the beginning of the next month.

There will be a 30-day money-back guarantee for regular subscribers.

This offer is for free, first-class hosting for the lifespan of TextDrive (a fiercely competitive, high-quality webhosting service with representation in 10 countries and counting), in exchange for a small initial investment.

Before I buy this offer, a technical question, can I move MySQL databases (using textpattern) from my current host to TextDrive? I mean how would I do that without losing any data?

I wonder the same thing. Also—is there any limit to those who sign up before June 1st? What I mean is, do I need to hurry and sign up? :) The “200 on offer” is confusing me. Are there only 200 spots?

You can easily move any existing MySQL database to TextDrive.

The offer is available to 200 subscribers – after that, subscriptions at regular rates (without the lifetime hosting offer) will be available.

Interesting offer $199 for life …

Did I understand it correctly?

Another question: There will be Add-On Domains?

You can have up to 10 domains pointing to directories in your server space, and unlimited subdomains.

Secure FTP access (SSL, SSL over TLS, SFTP)

All will be there.

CRON jobs via web interface

There, just not advertised in the original annoucement.

Script execution on mail arrival

Also there. The mail setup is Postfix delivering to a Mail directory, and any script can be run from a .forward file (Postfix/Apache/PHP will be on the same servers so you can post to Textpattern via email too; Active Spam Killer etc.)

You are very creative.

Odd questions: being a danish citizen, I’ve got a .dk domain.
This kind of hosting would psychologically call for a .com domain, if you get my logic. That is quite expensive to register for in Denmark (around $40 a year), –

Is there another way?

What’s a DNS access?

I signed up by the way!

Dean,

Thanks…

I just put a payment through on my wifes paypal account (I’m currently way over my own limit). I’ll send you an email letting you know her name. We’ll want to change everything over to my name… she hates this stuff.

Also… I’ve sent you an email about “Across the desks of bureaucrats”. Did you get the letter?
