10 June 1998

1. On 9 June 1998, a cyclone hit the coastal regions of the western Indian state of Gujarat. The UN Resident Coordinator in New Delhi reported today that, as per official information, the cyclone has affected 12 districts of Gujarat State. A total of 206 people have been killed and 210 injured and hospitalised. The details of affected areas (talukas) and the number of deaths in each district are given below:

2. The wind velocity has decreased from 100-120 km/h to 80 km/h, when the latest official report was received. Power supply and telecommunication links have been disrupted. The authorities are in the process of restoring these urgently. In Kutch district 3 camps have been established in which 2,050 evacuated persons are sheltered. In Jamnagar district 15 camps are sheltering 4,950 persons and in Junagadh district 2 camps are sheltering 100 persons. The collectors of the concerned districts have dispatched rescue and survey teams to assess the damage.

3. No appeal has been made for international assistance. The UN Resident Coordinator in New Delhi is in touch with the authorities and shall keep OCHA Geneva informed of the developments.
