# Simple Cross

### MATERIALS

• No. 20 Crochet Cotton

### SIZE

8 cm x 10.5 cm

This cross was designed when I was working on the Tatted Alphabet and Numerals - that series inspired a number of designs!

### 1ST ROW

1. Start at the lower inside corner of the right hand arm of the cross.
2. Wind the shuttle and do not cut off from the ball thread.
3. R 4 DS, 3 P sep by 4 DS, 4 DS, cl. R, RW. (note: the 1st and last Ps of each long C are joined to the corresponding Ps on the adjacent Cs.
4. C 4 DS, P, 4 DS, RW.
5. R 4 DS, J to adjacent P of previous R, 4 DS, 2 P sep by 4 DS, 4 DS, cl. R, RW.
6. C 4 DS, P, 4 DS, RW.
7. R 4 DS, J to adjacent P of previous R, 4 DS, 2 P sep by 4 DS, 4 DS, cl. R, do not RW.
8. R 4 DS, J to adjacent P of previous R, 4 DS, 2 P sep by 4 DS, 4 DS, cl. R, RW.
9. C 4 DS, J to P of previous C, RW.
10. R 4 DS, J to adjacent P of previous R, 4 DS, 2 P sep by 4 DS, 4 DS, cl. R, do not RW.
11. R 4 DS, J to adjacent P of previous R, 4 DS, 2 P sep by 4 DS, 4 DS, cl. R, RW.
12. C 4 DS, J to same P as previous C, 4 DS, RW.
13. R 4 DS, J to adjacent P of previous R, 4 DS, 2 P sep by 4 DS, 4 DS, cl. R, RW.
14. C 4 DS, J to free P of adjacent C, 4 DS, RW.
15. R 4 DS, J to adjacent P of previous R, 4 DS, 2 P sep by 4 DS, 4 DS, cl. R, RW.
16. C 4 DS, 3 P sep by 4 DS, 4 DS, RW.
17. R 4 DS, J to last P of previous R, 4 DS, J to central P of previous R, 4 DS, P, 4 DS, cl. R, RW.

Repeat from 4 onwards until three arms of the cross have been made, noting that the 1st and last Ps of the long central Cs are joined to each other in exactly the same way as the short Cs. The bottom section is made in the same way only it is lengthened as shown in the illustration so that it is 6 rings long.

### 2ND ROW

1. Wind the shuttle without cutting off from the ball thread.
2. J by SH thread to P joining 2 Rs at the centre.
3. C 4 DS, P, 4 DS, J by SH thread to free P of next R, do not RW twice.
4. C 4 DS, 3 P sep by 4 DS, 4 DS, J by SH thread to free P of next R, do not RW.
5. C 4 DS, P, 4 DS, J by SH thread to free P of next R, do not RW.
6. C 4 DS, 3 P sep by 4 DS, 4 DS, J by SH thread to free P of next R, do not RW.
7. C 4 DS, P, 4 DS, J by SH thread to free P of next R, do not RW.
8. C 4 DS, P, 4 DS, J by SH thread to P joining 2 Rs, do not RW.
9. C 4 DS, J to P of previous C, 4 DS, J by SH thread to free P of next R, do not RW.

This sets the pattern style for the outer row of the cross; work in similar fashion all round the edge, J to base of 1st C and finish ends.

Note: the final picot join is rather difficult done in this manner and you may want to plan the start of the cross so that you do not finish there - but that's how I worked it.
