Members of the Tuareg
  FESTIVAL IN THE DESERT 2004
Friday 5 November 2004 8.30pm-10pm; 1.45am-3.15am

Performances from the famously atmospheric musical gathering in the Sahara, introduced by Rita Ray. This annual meeting of Malian, Tuareg, European and American musicians has grown out of an annual local gathering.

For centuries, the different clans of the Tamaschek people - known in Arabic as the Tuareg - had met every January to settle disputes, discuss politics and make music. Three years ago the French band Lo'jo took part in the festival and started collaborating with local Tuareg groups in expanding the festival. The result has been rave reviews and a line up including local and international performers.
