Cory Doctorow, science fiction writer and representative for the EFF (Electronic Fronters Foundation), has posted an online copy of a talk he gave to Microsoft about DRM (Digital Rights Management) and copyright. The talk is an excellent primer about some of the hidden impacts of DRM on copyright and the marketplace for creative ideas. Everyone who has any interest in copyright and this important issue would be well-served by reading this presentation.

From a forum posting by T.L., comes an article on ATEASEWEB, about Deep Blue Funk's Nicholas Pobrey's newest presentation, Radiohead Vs. The Matrix. Definitely of interest to all synchers, and the article does correctly describe some of the limitations that copyright imposes on this little hobby...

Nielsen Rating System At Odds With RIAA's Claim Of "Lost Sales   (posted by Key) 2004-05-14 00:00:00
When speaking this month to a representative from Soundscan, the company that provides much of the data for the Billboard Top 200 Chart, I learned things that would contradict reported statements by the RIAA. Mainly that US labels have had a significant reduction in sales over the past three years. Cary Sherman, president of the RIAA, responded personally, put his rebuttals on the record and in the process exposed intriguing insight into the way the RIAA calculates "losses."

David Bowie is encouraging fans to remix his classic tracks with tracks from his new album, Reality. The most creative "theft" will win a prize (release as an .mp3 on Bowie's site, plus a new car). The music software needed for the task can be downloaded from Bowie's Web site, along with tracks from his new album.

CNN is reporting that cult favorite, Donnie Darko, will be re-released to theatres on May 29th. The new version will feature 20 minutes of never-before-seen footage, including new music and effects.
