Welcome!

Wikispecies is a new project supported by the Wikimedia Foundation with a great potential. It is meant to become an open, free directory of species. This will cover animalia, plantae, fungi, bacteria, archaea, protista and all other forms of life to the extent that our users allow us.

"Wikispecies is free. Because life is public domain!"

If you have any questions about Wikispecies, please do not hesitate to sign up at the Wikispecies mailing list: mailinglist

See Wikipedia on taxonomy for information on the Linnaean classification of species.
See the Village pump to discuss the project.
See the done and to do page for references to very detailed areas and defined future targets
See Wikispecies FAQ for replies to common concerns.

PR: Spread the word

Wikispecies is constantly growing, but this is due to the efforts of a small group of users. Now it is time to spread the word and attract local naturalists, birders, scientists at museums and universities, or officials of other taxonomy websites to boost the evolution of Wikispecies. Everybody is encouraged to contribute to Wikispecies' PR! If you would like to use a prepared text to inform others about Wikispecies, have a look at Wikispecies PR.

Call for illustrations: Wikimedia commons

The taxonavigation currently allows access to a considerable number of taxa, whereas it is still too early to recommend a template for a structure of contents. This is not true for images: some users have already started to upload image files and their help is much appreciated. However, it is Wikispecies' clearly defined goal to support the connections of other wiki projects. To achieve this, we encourage our users to consider our proposed Wikispecies image guidelines.

WikiSpecies and the languages

It is a basic feature of all wiki projects to support availibility by providing information in many languages. Should WikiSpecies follow this principle? Discuss the matter here.
