Emergency Car Radio Overide

-unspecified

By Alleybobs, Tue Oct 26th, 2004 at 08:58:12 AM PST

I think that emergency vehicle's should be fitted with a transmitter that can overide radio transmissions within a 50m radius. This would enable an ambulance or a fire engine to instruct a specific driver of another vehicle and tell them which way they would like them to move.In a situation where there are three or more lanes of traffic at a junction and as a driver all you hear is a siren which you are not really sure which direction it is coming from then the ability to say clear the centre lane or the left lane must be of use to the emergency services.Under these sort of circumstances we think that we are sure what to do but a direct instruction from the emergency vehicle would hopefully reduce any confusion. The system would overide a cars music radio/cd player in the same way that traffic news will switch channels for a bulletin and change back when the emergency vehicle has passed. This system would enable the emergeny driver to identify a possible blockage and say "Would the Coca Cola lorry please move to your right etc etc..

Pirate Radio (4.00 / 1) (#1)

And then we could get nice big transmitters on that frequency and send out pirate radio to an entire city.  Yes please!  This is a great idea!

emergency vehicle at traffic lights (4.00 / 1) (#2)

Also a device could be fitted to traffic signals at junctions so that emergency vehicles can transmit a signal which turns them all red - useful for ambulances at crossraods etc

I remember seeing a show on that in Australia (none / 0) (#4)

But it wasn't restricted to the radio.  If an emergency vehicle was within a certain distance, a red light blinked on the dash and the radio went quiet and a reasonably pleasant alarm sounded.

Already done somewhere in Australia, now someone go copy it and bring it here.

I love this place.

Great idea (none / 0) (#5)

That is a superb idea, but a lot of people are going to fight it... The car companies don't want to be forced to add something that will cut into their profits, and customers don't want to have to pay extra for a car...
Otherwise, its a great idea... maybe something that just overwhelms the radio signals within 300 yards...  It would annoy people living near the fire house...

By the way, there are already devices that allow fire engines and ambulances to turn stop lights red in the opposite direction, and green in the current direction.  they are like strobe lights that are mounted on top of the fire engine... The stop light needs to have a sensor to allow it to recognize the coded strobe light.  I used to work for a firetruck manufacturer and this was a optional line item.

Hmm.. how much time do you think people on an ambulance have for this? I think all you, and all the other cars in sight, will hear will be something like "AAARRGGHH GET THE H*** OUT OF THE WAY YOU !@#$%!!" or something like that.

I've seen ambulances pass by speeding and the codriver just sits grimly clutching his(or her's) chair and looking past an horizon not on this planet.

Positive thaught though, but I think you can better apply some sort of silent ski code. If everyone takes care not to hit the car in front of them, nobody gets hurt.

This already exists (none / 0) (#7)

This item already exists.  Saw it on the discovery channel a few years ago.  Well something similar I should say.  It would overide radio transmissions but it was a pre-recorded message that was played (easily modified from an design stand point).
If I can google anything up a little later (company name etc.) I will post the links for those interested.

weather radio (none / 0) (#11)
by Anonymous Hero on Mon Jan 24th, 2005 at 10:20:47 AM PST
all radios should also be equiped with the same technology as weather radios you can buy at radio shack for 20 bucks. Even if you are not listening to the radio, it would pop on to warn of a weather emergency.
