RD2, developed by VICS Technology Inc., enables the real-time monitoring on PCI bus speed, activity status and port 80H debugging information which are commonly used for BIOS self-diagnostics. RD2 is actually a relief for everyone that no expensive cost nor complicated skill is required.

RD2 is ideal for people enjoying over-clocking and using many I/O devices to do fine tuning on the system.

There has been several devices to detect the system's operation speed from the past. Most of them are run by software or to collect data through peripheral devices by using host CPU. In such cases, the CPU has to work properly, then it will inform the system operation speed only after OS boots up or even after BIOS starts up. With the originated concepts and hardware, RD2 will operate without occupying IRQ and I/O port resource and work even when the CPU malfunctions. DR2 is able to detect the damage or the installation error of the host CPU with port 80H debug feature. Remarkably, on jumper-less motherboard, you can see all the processes to set up a specified frequency from power on.

SW1 and SW3 can be used for IOSS RD1 BIOS Savior's ROM selection, IDE hard disk driver's master/slave setting interchange, and CMOS clearing to avoid opening the PC chassis.

SW3 is used for the PC case which does not have a reset switch or without the SMI switch which is used to shift the suspend mode manually.

AUX LED is a red-color LED used for systems with both IDE and SCSI interfaces using at the same time, and/or for SMI status display whenever the extra LED is required.

Front accessible USB port and 1394 port (for RD2 Pro)

Connect to the 3rd and the 4th USB headers of the motherboard to make access to the front. The connecting cable is in semi-finished condition to be able to fit  most motherboards. *RD2 itself does not have the 1394 feature.

1394 port provides the front accessibility for systems with 1394 add-on card or onboard 1394-featured motherboard. It supports the 6-pin connector. Users can have a convenient and high speed digital data-transferred device with this port. *RD2 itself does not have the 1394 feature.

The display mode can be changed by the mode switch.

In case of executing the port 80H or port 84H, the current mode will be suspended and the port 80H or port 84H output code will be displayed.

 

Frequency Mode (FREQUENCY)
Displays PCI bus clock frequency with multiple number by MULTIPLIER setting described below. The frequency is shown to 1 decimal digit. The standard PCI’s bus clock is 33.3 MHz. However, depending on the motherboard maker, model and BIOS settings, this figure would be different. It is very convenient for over-clockers to confirm the correct clock setting at hardware level. This display will stop if the system goes into suspend mode.

Frequency Display Multiplier Setting (MULTIPLIER)

  • You can display the frequency speed of the PCI bus clock in x1, x2, x3 and x4 modes by setting the 2 DIP switches to show the FSB or AGP speed. The MULTIPLIER switch can be changed while the system is running. However, a sharp tip is necessary to change the setting to prevent careless setting change.

    Bus Utilization Display Mode (UTILIZATION)
  • Shows the ratio in percentage of number of actual data transferring count and maximum possible data transferring count to 1 decimal figure with the letter “P”.

    RD2 calculates 4 bytes (32 bit) of data as 1 PCI bus data unit. Even only 1 byte data is flowing through the PCI bus, it still counts as 4 bytes to minimize the calculation error.

    The utilization monitoring might inform which components should be upgraded. For the hard disk data transferred monitoring, there are two types of IDE controllers: one is connected to the PCI bus and the other is directly to the core chip. RD2 cannot tell the data flowing status if the system used direct connection.

    PCI Bus Data Transfer Amount Display Mode (TRANSFER)
  • This mode shows total transferred data amount within 1 second with Kilo (byte) or Mega (byte) LED. RD2 uses 4 bytes (32bit) as one PCI bus data unit. The maximum of x4 speed error might occur if there is only 1 byte data flowing through the PCI bus. However, most of the PCI bus cards utilize full data width, i.e. 32(bit) for transferring, the error might not be a problem.

    The amount is displayed in maximum of 3 digit with 1 decimal figure with Kilo(byte) or Mega(byte) LED

    Port 80/84H PORT80/84H

    Port 80H is a debug port which is often used for output POST (Power On Self Test) debug code. This debug code consists of 2 digits of hexadecimal (0-9, A-F) code. Some companies including Compaq use 84H as debug code output port. Originally the debug code is designed to detect defected parts for the system support engineers and debugging support for application development engineers. For such a reason, not many stores sell the port 80H debug code display card.

    However, this feature is very practical in locating the errors in the system and solving the problems especially for those DIY PC users who have experiencing in “the system doesn’t work at all” and “don’t know where the problem is”.

    RD2 displays the debug code with large LED’s to make it easier to see. The first 2 digits show the type of port (either 80H or 84H) and the next 2 figures show the output debug code.
