A Fine Body of Gentlemen
A Fine Body of Gentlemen, a documentary by filmmaker
Geoff Burton, is the story of the first Aboriginal touring cricket
team. Filmed around the Wollongong area, and featuring a number
of local actors, the documentary also provided Film Illawarra
a chance to offer direct industry work experience in post-production.
The documentary was cut on Film Illawarra's AVID
editing suite and editor Frans Vandenburg was able to take on
an local filmmaker as an editing trainee. The successful applicant
was Ben Draisma, and through the duration of the editing process
was able to gain hands-on experience in post production techniques.
Of the opportunity, Ben (who has since found work
in the industry) said: "The traineeship was extremely worthwhile,
and I feel that the opportunities it has opened up for me are
very great indeed. It has effectively leap-frogged me past several
of the stages of work experience, whilst being paid, credited
and networked with experienced and well-credited industry professionals
(which is basically the only way to get in to the
industry). I couldnt have gained the experience and opportunities
that I have without the traineeship."
Film Illawarra hosted the premiere screening of
the documentary at the University of Wollongong's Faculty of Creative
Arts in October 2002.
