The Sydney Olympic Games produced some of the most memorable moments for the Dutch team. At the Aquatic Centre, Pieter van den Hoogenband caused an upset by defeating home-town favourite, Ian Thorpe to take the gold in the 200m freestyle and equal the world record he set in the semifinals [a record previously held by Thorpe]. He also defeated multiple world and Olympic champion, Alex Popov in the 100m freestyle after breaking the world record in the semifinal. Inge de Bruijn won three gold medals in the women's events, taking out the 50m and 100m freestyle and 100m butterfly, the latter in a world record time. In cycling, Leontien Zijlaard, who had overcome serious illness in the mid 1990's that left her unable to ride a bike, won three gold medals in the individual time trial, 3000m individual pursuit and road race.
