EDN Reports "Embedded Linux nears Real Time"
EDN's Warren Webb surveys several embedded Linux strategies, including methods offered by ELC members and concludes that "Linux has become a viable alternative for many real-time-embedded-system designs." Click the story title to read the full report.

Third Edition of Embedded Linux Resource Catalog
The 2005 edition of Extension Media's Embedded Linux Resource Catalog is now available. Bigger and better than ever, the catalog features more ads (including one from Redmond) and more editorial than prior editions. Click on the story title for the 2005 edition.

Windows, Linux grapple in Great Gadget Smack-Down!
LinuxDevices.com has constructed an entertaining comparison that fully illustrates the progress of embedded Linux developments vs. the main competition. It's really an eye-opening look and strong encouragement to companies weighing Linux vs. Windows for embedded projects. Click the story title to begin your enjoyment.

Major Shift in Them vs. Us
The competitive playing field where open source concepts are tested over and over again against proprietary business models is shifting rapidly. In this copyrighted essay by always-interesting Eric Raymond (of The Cathedral & the Bazaar fame), new paradigms are masterfully portrayed. The essay is number 11 in Raymond's Halloween Documents series.

Raymond argues that it's time to reload and refocus our marketing messages based on the shift. Open source advocates, nearly always on the defensive against the globe's biggest software marketing meatgrinder, will gain fresh heart from new proactive advocacy. Guess who's on the defensive now!

We especially like the advice: "Hammer them without mercy — but do it in a quiet, reasonable voice and keep control of the terms of argument."

Also useful is this gem: "...we need to attack the shared in their shared source rather than defending the open in our open source."

"National Security Risk" Hysteria Roundly Debunked by ELC members and Groklaw
An unbalanced and naive effort to resurrect and spread Linux FUD on the issue of U.S. national security backfired over the Easter holiday thanks to fast action by ELC members LynuxWorks and FSM Labs, working with Groklaw's Pamela Jones. Click on the story title to learn more. You will definitely appreciate the thoroughness and depth of coverage.

The ELC's Chairman and LynuxWorks CEO, Dr. Inder Singh, also evaluated the FUD and issued a white paper on the subject. Read it at

Embedded Linux from ELC Member Featured in Smartphone line from Motorola
Motorola has launched their promised embedded Linux-based A760 high-end
smartphone in the Asia Pacific region. This phone runs MontaVista Linux and Motorola's developers relied on tools from both MontaVista Software and Metrowerks. Motorola plans to introduce the phone in Europe and the U.S. at a later date.

A world leader in cell phones, Motorola, the parent of ELC board member Metrowerks, plans broad use of embedded Linux in cellular products, in competition with operating systems from Symbian and Microsoft that are used by Nokia and others. ELC members MontaVista Software and Metrowerks both played a role in the handset's development. Read ZDnet's story here for the details. http://news.zdnet.co.uk/hardware/mobile/0,39020360,39115890,00.htm

The A760 includes a PDA-style suite of applications, video and music players, IM and digital camera.
