Major Shift in Them vs. Us |
|
|
The competitive playing field where open source concepts are tested over and over again against proprietary business models is shifting rapidly. In this copyrighted essay by always-interesting Eric Raymond (of The Cathedral & the Bazaar fame), new paradigms are masterfully portrayed. The essay is number 11 in Raymond's Halloween Documents series.
Raymond argues that it's time to reload and refocus our marketing messages based on the shift. Open source advocates, nearly always on the defensive against the globe's biggest software marketing meatgrinder, will gain fresh heart from new proactive advocacy. Guess who's on the defensive now!
We especially like the advice: "Hammer them without mercy — but do it in a quiet, reasonable voice and keep control of the terms of argument."
Also useful is this gem: "...we need to attack the shared in their shared source rather than defending the open in our open source."
