Project Abstract

A final vegetation map with nominal 0.5 ha resolution has been finished for the Sevilleta NWR. The map includes 13 vegetation classes derived from an unsupervised classification of 12 Landsat Thematic Mapper images (NDVI transformed) collected in various seasons over a seven year period (1987-1993). The essential strategy was to exploit the phenological dynamics of the various plant taxa on this site as reflected by seasonal/annual changes in the NDVI signal. Plant composition, height, and cover were measured at three or more ground points for each class. A plant classification at the association level was developed by Esteban Muldavin of the New Mexico Heritage Program from which the initial 32 images classes were labeled and combined into the final 13 vegetation classes. This should facilitate direct comparison with other mapping efforts in the state, such as The Gray Ranch, Melrose Missile Range, White Sands National Monument, and Cannon Air Force Base.
