Elevators & escalators

Elevators provide access to platforms from street level and have video cameras, intercoms, chimes, Braille and raised lettering.

Electronic signs in each station display elevator outage information on the mezzanine level. If an elevator is out of service, shuttle service is available or can be arranged to transport customers to the nearest station with an operable elevator. Also, some stations have center platforms that allow for easy reversals and transfers.

As we continue to expand our system, WMATA policy now states that all new stations must have elevator redundancy to ensure at least one accessible path is available to customers at any time. Also, an elevator rehabilitation project has been completed, and all Metro elevators meet ADA requirements.

Escalators also provide access to street level. To ensure safety, most escalators in rail stations have bright yellow paint at the edge of each step to assist persons with low vision. We are working quickly to repaint those escalators at stations where the yellow paint has faded.
