6/30/2003: Moses Wine Tasting

Roger L. Simon is hosting a book signing and wine tasting party this Wednesday evening at the wonderful Dutton’s Bookstore in Brentwood. Click the link for full details; here’s your chance to get a signed copy of Roger’s new Moses Wine book, and meet some of the luminaries of the blogosphere at the same time. A good time will be had.

Oh man, I wish I could be there! Sounds like fun!

#2   Colt  6/30/2003 01:54PM PST

Will someone please find out why this site is called "Little Green Footballs"? I suspect a little fine wine may loosen Charles' tongue. :-)

#3   Avi  6/30/2003 02:01PM PST

A Moses Wine Testing, huh? That shouldn't be so difficult.

"Now let's see, Kedem, or Manischewitz?"

#4   PDM  6/30/2003 02:04PM PST

Avi,

Don't forget Rashi.

#5   BH  6/30/2003 02:04PM PST

Charles... AND Starsky?!? man, they pulled out all the stops. ;)

#6   Rev. Jay  6/30/2003 02:07PM PST

Sounds like it would be an enjoyable event. Granted I don't drink, but I love good cheese and there is generally around any wine tasting event. Also would be enjoyable to meet many of the figures in the blogsphere. Too bad I am spending the summer in Indiana. Something like this would almost make the 20 hour drive from Oregon worth the trouble.

#7   Juliette  6/30/2003 02:13PM PST

Can't make it. ::::sigh:::: I have a prior commitment right at the same time (7pm). I'd love to meet zulubaby, mommydoc and, especially, our illustrious Lizardoid Cheiftain in person. Maybe next time. :-(

#8   Zaide  6/30/2003 02:14PM PST

Good wine, good nosh, good friends. Do it get any better? I envy muchly.

#9   Mike Silverman  6/30/2003 02:15PM PST

I had lunch with Roger last week and he is a very smart and interesting guy. Definitely if you live in LA try to stop by and meet him.

#10   RaphDaRussian  6/30/2003 02:29PM PST

I've always wanted to meet Charles so I think I'll show up...

And will most likely be the youngest one there...

#11   Avi  6/30/2003 02:43PM PST

PDM,

You know, I've always wondered how Rashi and Bartenura found time to run wine businesses while composing their mammoth commentaries. The only solution I can come up is that they both got very, very little sleep.

#12   PDM  6/30/2003 03:02PM PST

#11 Avi,

Well I'm glad they sacrificed some sleep. I really like the Bartenura (product of Italy) Moscato D'asti. It's more like a wine cooler than a wine, but I manage to put down a bottle every Shabbos.
Lately I'm taking a drinking lead from the Rebbe (who also did not sleep much). I've taken quite a liking to a liqueur called Benedictine. Ok, I admit it, it's made in France.

#13   Zaide  6/30/2003 03:10PM PST

If you haven't already done so, try Drambuie. I read somewhere that it's the only alcoholic beverage that's made from another alcoholic beverage that's good to drink. Scotch. Tastes nothing like Scotch.
Nice after dinner sipper.

#14   PDM  6/30/2003 03:14PM PST

#13 Zaide,

Is it kosher?

#15   bigel  6/30/2003 04:03PM PST

Does he plan anything like this in NYC, and will the bloggers who show up be willing to talk to ordinary schmucks like me who don't have a blog, but just an ordinary everyday job?

#16   Elizabeth  6/30/2003 04:09PM PST

Congrats Roger. Bon chance!

#17   Zaide  6/30/2003 05:29PM PST

#14 PDM
Yep. According to Ask the Rabbi.

#18   Julie  6/30/2003 06:56PM PST

Barring any last minute catastrophe, I plan on attending. And no offence to Starsky, but I'm much more excited to meet Charles than him!

#19   Yehudit  6/30/2003 08:14PM PST

The Bartenura Pinot Grigiot is very nice.

Teal Lake is a kosher winery that has a nice Shiraz.

I wish I could be there too. You will alll have to post lots of dish here and tell the rest of us what Charles is like. (If he's smart he'll cut off his hair and then he can wander around incognito.)

#20   Studsup  6/30/2003 08:25PM PST

I replaced Sauternes with Hungarian Tokaji ( 5 or 6 puttonyos - level of sweetness, 6 being most sweet). I can get 6 for about $50 per bottle in NJ.

Give it a try.

This past Christmas and New Years I replaced my normal gift-giving of Champagne with Schramsberg sparkling white methode champenoise. Pretty good really but I'm up for other suggestions.

Ready to stop with Canadian Beer for American? Of course now there are so many craft brewed American beers, you don't have to go import. But if you want "premium" look for Highfalls Brewery (carries now the Genessee line plus Michael Sheas, Dundee). It may be the only premium American brewery that actually still uses all barely malt in the brewing -- no rice or "other fine grains".

#21   piglet  6/30/2003 09:27PM PST

There is always He'brew, the chosen beer.
