The Flavelle Medal

for meritorious achievement in biological science

Sir Joseph Wesley Flavelle (1858-1939), a financier and businessman of Toronto, endowed a medal in 1924. The award consists of a gold plated silver medal and is awarded every two years if there is a suitable candidate.

The medal is awarded for an outstanding contribution to biological science during the preceding ten years or for significant additions to a previous outstanding contribution to biological science.

The selection committee consists of four members in biological or medical disciplines from the Life Sciences Division of the Academy of Science, appointed by the Division for four-year terms. The senior member is the chairperson.
