NELVANA’S 6teen: NEW BROADCASTERS, NEW EPISODES AND A NOD FROM CARTOONS ON THE BAY
April 14, 2005
(Cannes, France)—Today, at MIPTV 2005, Nelvana is proud to announce that it has finalized further broadcast agreements for its mall-based tween toon 6teen.
Cartoon Network Latin America and ZigZap Poland are the latest partners to join a growing slate of international broadcasters for the 2-D series. Nelvana recently rung in a raft of 6teen sales, including France 3, Fairmead (Africa), LUK (Spain) and NOGA (Israel).
The 26 x half-hour animated show hit Canadian airwaves in 2004 on TELETOON, where it has been steadily gaining a loyal audience. During its Winter/Spring 2005 season, 6TEEN ranked amongst the network's top 10 series with kids six to 11 in both English and French markets; specifically, the series reached the top three with girls six to 11. (Source: Nielsen Media Research, from January 3 to March 27 2005, S-S, 6a to 6a) "TELETOON is extremely pleased with the success of 6teen. The show has garnered favorable attention from media and our viewers. It has been a huge hit with girls two to 11, and six to 11 where it remains amongst our top three titles on our English network, while securing the number-one position in the French market with the same key demo,” confirms Carole Bonneau, TELETOON's VP Programming.
Nelvana has just greenlit a second season (bring the episode count up to 52 half-hours) of the tween sitcom, which follows the minimum wage adventures of six teens toiling in the most sacred of adolescent hangouts—the mall—while leaning on one another for support and friendship. The show stars megalomaniac Jonesy, the soulful Wyatt, skater-dude Jude, the athletic Jen, girly-girl Caitlin and the ever-sarcastic Nikki. Surrounding them are the denizens of the typical shopping mall—prank-playing preteens, menacing rent-a-cops and overbearing bosses.
A 48-minute, horror-themed special is also on the production slate. 6teen is one of five series nominated for a Pulcinella Award at Cartoons on the Bay 2005 in the category TV Series for All Audiences. It is the only Canadian production to receive a nomination this year.
