Note: The requirements list below are general for each badge or award. This info is not meant to substitute the official handbook requirements in any way. The Handbook should be referenced for All requirements and info pertaining to each Cub Rank.

Bobcat Badge

Bobcat Badge Requirements

Must be between ages eight and eleven years old or have completed the first grade. Regardless of boys age, he must complete the Bobcat Trail. This is he first step in becoming a Cub Scout.

To earn the Bobcat Badge the boy must complete the eight tracks of "Akela" which are:

  • Learn and say the Cub Scout Promise.
  • Learn and say the Law of The Pack and explain what it means.
  • Tell what "Webelos" means.
  • Show the Cub Scout Sign and explain what it means.
  • Show the Cub Scout Handshake and explain what it means.
  • Say the Cub Scout Motto.
  • Give the cub Scout Salute and explain what it means.
  • With Parent or Guardian complete the excercises in the parents guide, "How to protect your child from child abuse".

    Progress Recognition

    Immediate Recognition Patch and Beads

    As a Cub Scout completes his achievements towards the Wolf (and Bear) ranks, the Den Leader recognizes a boy's hard work with the Immediate Recognition patch and beads. This is used as an incentive towards continued achievement. A Cub Scout must have completed any three acheivements towards the Wolf and Bear Badges.

    When a boy's parent has okayed the tracks your boy has filled in for all twelve achievements in his Wolf handbook, he may become a Wolf Cub Scout. The Progress Towards Ranks badge is available as an incentive during the Wolf program to encourage a Cub on his achievement work. The twelve achievements are:

  • Feats of Skill
  • Your Flag
  • Keep Your Body Healthy
  • Know Your Home and Community
  • Tools For Fixing and Building
  • Start A Collection
  • Your Living World
  • Cooking and Eating
  • Be Safe At Home and On The Street
  • Family Fun
  • Duty to God
  • Making Choices

    Electives Arrow Patches

    Arrow Points

    A Wolf Cub Scout who has not completed second grade or reach his ninth birthday can earn Arrow points for completing "Wolf Electives". There are 115 electives to choose from. For each ten (10) or more electives completed one (1) Arrow is earned. Only one Gold Arrow may be earned and any additional ten (10) electives completed will receive Silver Arrows.

    Bear Badge

    Must have completed second grade or who are nine years old. To earn the Bear Badge the boy must complete twelve (12) of the twenty-four (24) achievements listed below.

    There are four (4) parts to the Bear Trail. Under these four (4) parts are the twenty-four (24) achievements that must be completed to recieve the Bear Badge. The achievements are:

    During the boys progress towards the Bear Badge, a boy may also earn the Progress Toward Rank Badge. As with the Wolf Badge, the boy may also earn "Arrow Credits" for any extra achievements.

    Webelos Badge

    Webelos Badge

    The Webelos badge is the fourth rank in Cub Scouts. A Cub may start working toward the badge as soon as he joins a Webelos Den, provided he has completed the third grade or is at least ten (10) years old. He may earn the Webelos Badge after he has been in the den three (3) months. The Webelos Badge is the first step in a boy's transition to a Boy Scout Troop. As he completes the achievements in th Webelos Scout Book, he will work on "Activity Badges".

    Activity Badges are divided into five (5) groups with four (4) activities in each group. There are 20 Activity Badges to earn. The activities are:

    Compass Point Emblem

    Earning The Compass Point Emblem

    After you have earned the Webelos badge, you can earn the compass points emblem. It is awarded after you earn seven activity badges: four more in addition to the three you earned for the Webelos badge. Wear your compass points emblem attached to the button on the right pocket of your Webelos uniform shirt. After you earn the compass points emblem, you'll receive a metal compass point for each four additional activity badges you earn. Pin these compass points on the emblem in the "E," "W," or "S" positions, in any order you choose. You can earn the emblem and all three compass points by completing 19 activity badges, including the three required for the Webelos badge.

    Arrow of Light

    The Arrow of Light Award

    The Arrow of Light Award is the next step a boy takes in becoming a Boy Scout. It is the "Highest Rank" in Cub Scouts. In order to recieve this honor the cub Scout must have completed the fourth grade and have earned the Webelos Badge and at least eight (8) activity badges including Citizen, readyman and Fitness. The total must include one from each of the five activity groups. This highest rank is the only Cub Scout badge that can be worn on the Boy Scout uniform. The requirements are:

  • Be active in your Webelos den for at least 6 months since completing the fourth grade (or for at least six months since becoming 10 years old), and earn the Webelos badge.
  • Show your knowledge of the requirements to become a Boy Scout by doing all of these:
    a)Repeat from memory and explain in your own words the Scout Oath or Promise and the 12 points of the Scout Law.
    b)Tell how you have practiced them in your everyday life.
    c)Give and explain the Scout motto, slogan, sign, salute, and handclasp.
    d)Understand the significance of the Scout badge. Know its parts and tell what each stands for.
    e)Tell how a Boy Scout uniform is different from a Webelos Scout uniform.
    f)Tie the joining knot (square knot)
  • Earn five more activity badges in addition to the three you already earned for the Webelos badge. The total of eight activity badges must include: a)Fitness (already earned for the Webelos badge) b)Citizen c)Readyman
  • At least one from the Outdoor Group
  • At least one from the Mental Skills Group
  • At least one from the Technology Group
  • Two more of your choice See page 22 for the activity badge groups.
  • With your Webelos den, visit at least one Boy Scout troop meeting, and one Boy Scout-oriented outdoor activity.
  • Participate in a Webelos overnight campout or day hike.

    After you have completed all five of the above requirements, and after a talk with your Den Webelos leader, arrange to visit, with your parent or guardian, a meeting of a Boy Scout troop you think you might like to join. Have a conference with the Scoutmaster. Complete and turn in a "Join Boy Scouting" application to the Scoutmaster during the conference.
