INTRODUCTION
The name McGovern, or to use an earlier form,
Magauran, is associated with one of the leading clans of
the Kingdom of Breifne in Medieval Ireland. Today it is
commonly found in the Counties of Cavan, Leitrim, and
Fermanagh. The names Baxter, Cafferty, Cassidy, Curran,
Dolan, Maguire, McGoldrick, McHugh, McKiernan, McManus,
McTiernan, Prior, Reilly, and Sheridan, are common in the
area as well, and families of those names are included in
this site.
The site contains information about these families,
and their descendants, in Ireland, America, Australia,
and elsewhere. The data is arranged in eight family files
(listed to the left). The first five were residents of
the Roman Catholic Parish of Templeport, in County Cavan,
and most of them lived in that part of the parish which
was split off as Corlough Parish in 1877. Each of these
files, however, contains data on several related
families. The sixth file starts with a couple married in
Templeport, but residing in Lower Drumreilly Parish,
County Leitrim. The final two files cover families from
Glangevlin Parish in Cavan. Glangevlin had also been a
part of Templeport, but had become a separate parish at
an earlier date.
Where They Came From gives a brief look at the
historical and geographic context in which these families
lived. Townlands is a list of Catholic Parishes and the
townlands in each which are encountered in the Family
Files. The final page, Recommended Links, takes one to
other related sites.
The great exodus of people from this part of Ireland
occurred, not in mid century, at the time of the famine,
but in its final quarter. Focusing on the situation as it
was on the eve of this exodus, there are roughly 25
families covered in these pages. In recent years, contact
has been established among a few of the descendants of
these families. The exchange of information which has
taken place has made possible this site, which covers
over 2,500 individuals. The purpose is to disseminate the
information to others who may be interested, with the
hope that doing so will result in contact with, or news
of, other relatives.
While the author takes responsibility for the
contents of the site, it is the result of collaboration
among family members residing in Ireland, England,
Australia, and the United States. Additional information,
comments, or suggestions are welcome. Additions to the
group of family members sharing information will also be
most welcome.
