RHP Rick Bauer and LHP John Parrish aren't being used in key situations and appear to be left out of the bullpen rotation. Bauer has gone more than two weeks without an appearance and could be sent down to create a spot for a righthanded bat off the bench. . . .

After allowing eight earned runs in a start against the Tigers, LHP Erik Bedard allowed one run over the next 23 innings and cemented his spot in the rotation. He had trouble retiring hitters last season because he lacked an out pitch, but his changeup has become his most effective pitch during his resurgence.

SEE A DIFFERENT GAME: Matchups pitting a lefthanded hitter against a lefthanded pitcher are usually avoided in making out a starting lineup, but manager Lee Mazzilli wanted DH B.J. Surhoff to face LHP David Wells in a recent game against Boston. Surhoff has a .362 average against Wells and has faced him for more than a decade. The decision worked: Surhoff homered off Wells in that game.

TSNUMBER: 7.60. The Orioles pitching staff's strikeouts per nine innings, which leads the American League. There was a question entering the season whether their young starting rotation could compile strikeouts and pitch deep into games.

Larry Bigbie - #3 - Left Field - 6'4" - 207lbs
Sat May 14 2005 - Larry Bigbie's left hamstring feels much better than it did when he was removed from Thursday's game when it tightened up. He received treatment and took batting practice yesterday and shouldn't miss any more time with the injury. "It's a relief to wake up today and not feel anything," Bigbie said.
Sammy Sosa - #21 - Right Field - 6'0" - 230lbs
Sat May 14 2005 - Sammy Sosa had a cleanup procedure performed on his foot today. The Orioles hope he can resume working out in a week to 10 days. Now it looks like Sosa will miss at least three weeks due to the staph infection in his left foot. B.J. Surhoff has replaced him in the starting lineup.
B.J. Ryan - #52 - Pitcher - 6'6" - 249lbs
Fri May 13 2005 - The Orioles aren't worried about overusing closer B.J. Ryan early in the season. Ryan has appeared in 19 of the team's 34 games this season, including 11 of the past 15. "You'd like to give your closer a couple days [off] and spread the game out a little bit, but he is a horse," manager Lee Mazzilli said. "He wants the ball every day."
