Police Arrest Man Perched on Atlanta Crane
ATLANTA (AP) - A homicide suspect who spent 56 hours perched on an 18-story construction crane was in custody early Saturday after police climbed the structure and arrested him, authorities said. "Apparently, he was thirsty," police spokesman Sgt. John Quigley said.

Iraqi Bombers Claim They Were Deceived
BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - Wisam Younis' sole ambition in life, he said Friday, is to kill Americans. So he claimed surprise when he discovered his car bomb had killed eight Iraqis and wounded more than 80 outside a Baghdad restaurant. Younis and brothers Badr and Yassin Shakir are charged with murder and face the death penalty in the May 23 attack.

Saudi Arabia's King Fahd Hospitalized
RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (AP) - King Fahd, whose efforts to strengthen ties between Saudi Arabia - the world's largest oil exporter - and the United States provoked the wrath of Islamic militants, was hospitalized Friday, apparently suffering from pneumonia. Fahd's half brother, Crown Prince Abdullah, has been Saudi Arabia's de facto ruler since Fahd suffered a debilitating stroke in 1995. Abdullah is expected to become king should Fahd die.

Money Wasted on Unneeded Bases, Bush Says
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Speaking out for the first time in favor of controversial base closings, President Bush said Friday the nation is wasting billions of dollars on unnecessary military facilities and needs the money for the war on terrorism. Bush, who faces opposition from many states to shutting down bases, tried to be reassuring. He said the bases would be chosen fairly and the government would do all it could to help affected communities recover.

U.N. Nuke Conference Offers No New Action
UNITED NATIONS (AP) - A monthlong conference to toughen global controls on nuclear arms ended Friday with nothing to show for its four weeks of divisive work. From Japan's "extreme regret" to Norway's "profound disappointment," delegates expressed frustration that the failure to agree on an action plan for growing nuclear threats might weaken the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty, the pact that has helped keep a lid on doomsday weapons for 35 years.

Feds Investigate Blindness-ED Drug Link
WASHINGTON (AP) - Federal health officials are probing reports of blindness among dozens of men who used Viagra and other impotence drugs - but at the same time cautioning that the vision loss can be linked to the same illnesses that lead to impotence. The Food and Drug Administration disclosed Friday that it was in discussions with the makers of Viagra, Cialis and Levitra about what the labels of those drugs should say about the rare cases of varying degrees of vision loss, including blindness. The maker of Cialis already has voluntarily added a one-line mention to its label.

Defense Suddenly Rests in Jackson Case
SANTA MARIA, Calif. (AP) - The Michael Jackson child molestation trial hurtled toward a close Friday as prosecutors showed jurors a video of the accuser being interviewed by police and defense lawyers decided not to put on a rebuttal case. Closing arguments could begin as early as Wednesday.

'Green Acres' Star Eddie Albert Dies at 99
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Eddie Albert, the actor best known as the constantly befuddled city slicker-turned-farmer in television's "Green Acres," has died. He was 99. Albert died of pneumonia Thursday at his home in the Pacific Palisades area, in the presence of caregivers including his son Edward, who was holding his hand at the time.

Stocks Close Higher Ahead of Long Holiday
NEW YORK (AP) - Stocks eked out modest gains Friday ahead of the long holiday weekend as investors eyed higher oil prices and a government report that showed rising personal incomes but slower growth in consumer spending. With a separate report showing better-than-expected consumer confidence, the day's economic data added up to a wash, analysts said. Trading was light, and stocks seemed to stall after reaching significant highs over the last seven weeks. Except for the May employment report due next Friday, there may be few catalysts ahead.

Angels Make Wild Comeback, Beat Royals 9-8
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Dallas McPherson's solo homer off Mike MacDougal in the 10th inning capped a wild comeback Friday night and gave the Los Angeles Angels a 9-8 victory over the Kansas City Royals. McPherson's one-out shot over the wall in right center, his third of the season and second in two nights, came on a 1-0 pitch from MacDougal (2-2).
