There has been a bread bakery in Shaw, near Oldham, since 1901, originally known as the Ideal Bakery. It moved to its present site on Glebe Street in 1938, with Warburtons taking over in 1965. The bakery produces 500,000 loaves a week and distributes them to major multiples and independent retailers throughout Greater Manchester, Cheshire and Derbyshire. It employs around 200 people and produces a wide range of Warburtons bread products.

Bolton – Hereford Street
The Bolton Hereford Street bakery employs 558 people and produces over 2 million bread products a week. It has a special place in the history of the company as it stands on the site of the Model Bakery, built by Henry Warburton in the early 1900s and is close to where it all began in 1876 with six small loaves in a corner shop. Over the years its success has helped fuel growth around the rest of the country and shaped the UK approach to community relations by leading the way on school visit programmes and local sponsorships. The bakery has a remarkable reputation for long-service. There are over 75 employees who have been with the bakery 25+ years and several families with more than one generation on the site.

Bolton – Variety Bakery
Following an £8 million investment Warburtons opened its new Variety Bakery in Bolton in 1998, dedicated, as the name suggests, to new product innovation. With 30% of Warburtons business growth coming from sales of new products the Variety Bakery is key to the company’s on-going success. Four years after it opened the Variety Bakery is already half as big again. It is nicknamed ‘the walls that never stay still’ because of the constant changes needed to meet new product demand.
With a 150-strong workforce, the bakery produces more than 500,000 loaves and 150,000 packs of bread rolls each week. Among the 20 different lines produced at the Bakery are Warburtons popular fruit loaves and hot cross bun loaf.
Since opening in 1981 the Warburtons Burnley operation has baked and distributed over one billion bread products. When it first opened, the bakery was considered the most advanced in Europe attracting interest from all over the world.
Burnley currently produces just over one million bread products a week which are distributed to major multiples and independent retailers throughout the Lancashire area. The bakery’s best-selling products are Warburtons Toastie and the Medium wax wrapped sliced loaf and it also produces Super Toastie and Half Loaf It produces 350,000 pancakes, crumpets and potato cakes, among others every week.
The Burnley bakery covers 60,000 square feet and has a 27 strong fleet of delivery vehicles. It employs more than 300 people, many of whom have clocked up more than 20 years service. At least seven families have two or more generations working at the site, reflecting the strong family culture.

Established in 1986, Warburtons Runcorn depot employs 50 people including - amazingly - four sets of brothers. The depot distributes more than 450,000 Warburtons products a week throughout Runcorn, Chester, Wirral and North Wales. In 2002, the Runcorn depot broke the 20 million mark in terms of number of products distributed within a year. Among the most popular products are the 800g Medium wax wrap loaf and the Toastie loaf.

The original depot was situated in Caunce St. Blackpool. However, sales outgrew floor space and the operation was moved to a purpose-built depot at Squires Gate in 1996. The site now employs 56 people and distributes more than 420,000 products a week throughout the Fylde Coast area and the Lake District including Barrow and Ulverston.

Brinwell Road bakery in Blackpool
Brinwell Road bakery was established in 1977 to produce rolls for Warburtons. In 1983 it underwent an extensive refurbishment which doubled the output of buns from 12,000 to 24,000 an hour.
Today the bakery employs around 100 people covering all bakery operations, hygiene and administration. It produces a range of packaged rolls, baps and fruit teacakes - some 14 million packs a year - including 12-packs of sliced baps and fruit teacakes, 6-packs of sliced baps and 4-packs of fruit teacakes and barm cakes. The 12-packs have been produced for over 20 years and have long been a favourite of hoteliers & picnickers on Blackpool's famous promenade nearby.
