How the Buzz Index Works
A subject's buzz score is the percentage of Yahoo! users searching for that subject on a given day, multiplied by a constant to make the number easier to read. Weekly leaders are the subjects with the greatest average buzz score for a given week.

Pokemon
If you think Pokemon is so late nineties, it's time to call on your inner Pikachu. The game of pocket monsters never strays from our top 500 list, and the under-13 set continues to pound out thousands of searches a day in hot Poke-pursuit. Clearly, the multiplayer game has embedded itself in Game Boys and GameCubes across the land, and Pokemon Emerald, the sport's newest entry, has ferociously gobbled up buzz since its debut. So, for those of us who wouldn't know what to do with a Pokeball if it hit us on the head, we pause for a quick timeline.

It all started in Japan with a 1996 Nintendo game. Two years later, Poke-mania invaded the unsuspecting U.S. with the release of two games, a cartoon series, and an English version of the trading cards. The little pocket monsters now number in the hundreds, and there's no end in sight.

Related Poke-searches continue to sweep though Buzz, with spikes just yesterday on cards, cheats, and games. We spotted Pokemon Crater on the rise, and certain young Buzz readers alerted us to the hotly anticipated Pokemon Diamond and Pokemon Pearl versions. This all may vex parents and, uh, Buzz writers alike, but it may be time to make friends with Munchlax and perhaps even (gasp!) procure a Nintendo DS.

Here are the top games currently sought out by master Pokemon trainers. If you know an 8-year-old with a birthday coming up, take notice...

And, just for the heck of it, some of the top character searches from the Pokedex...
