Marine Ecology

The staff in this section are involved in a range of projects including:

  • commenting on various environmental issues and providing advice to government and the public
  • contributing to both public (educational) programs and commercial programs
  • supervising post-graduate research
  • conducting field research.

Research

Research has targeted habitats particularly susceptible to human impact. These habitats include the sediments of estuaries and sandy beaches in the Sydney area. Programs deal with the ecology and biology of benthic invertebrate populations, the structure and composition of communities and the rates of colonisation of contaminated sediments.

Special projects:

  • Temporal and spatial patterns in the Hawkesbury River estuary and their relationships with abiotic environmental factors;
  • Recovery of benthos following dredging;
  • The biology and ecology of two species of amphipod inhabiting sandy beaches near Sydney
  • The rates of colonisation of experimentally emplaced contaminated sediments in Botany Bay (in collaboration with the Environment Protection Agency)
