Port Survey for Introduced Marine Species - Sydney Harbour
The Sydney Ports Corporation commissioned the Australian Museum in 2001 to
undertake a baseline survey of marine organisms from Sydney Harbour.
The purpose of the survey was to collect data on the occurrence of
introduced marine species of animals and plants in Sydney Harbour's
port facilities, and supply recommendations for restricting further
introductions. Three months of extensive collecting by scuba divers
from the harbour bottom and wharves, as well as grab samples, beam
trawls, trapping and environmental data were undertaken by Australian
Museum staff in 57 different sites.
This survey is one of many from international ports all around Australia.
The results of which helped the Australian Quarantine Inspection Services
(AQIS) introduce their Ballast Water Decision Support System in 2001 to
minimise the risk of further introductions of exotic marine pests.
Below is the final report completed in May 2002, with appendices containing
all the data of the fauna and flora collected, and a comprehensive checklist
of all the marine species collected from Sydney Harbour taken from the
Australian Museum and Royal Botanic Gardens databases. As this is the
first extensive survey of many parts of Sydney Harbour since 1899, many
new records of species were documented.
