The recent news that a
woman's fertile window is
more unpredictable than previously thought is not that surprising once the Lunar Cycle is considered.

Study finds that women sometimes ovulate more than once in a given month.

The Lunar Fertility Cycle certainly appears to be the Hidden Fertility Cycle.

Not only does it appear to play a role in the timing of pregnancy, the body often alters its menstrual cycle length in accordance with this cycle.

The following forum message was posted re: the Fertility Rhythms website, our theory and our calendars:

"This site talks about how women go through peak times for fertility based on the lunar return. Might seem kind of wacky, but I went back through the calendars and sure enough my children who were concieved fast (1-3 cycles), were conceived in what would be considered peak fertility cycles according to these calendars. And the recent 8 month dry spell I've had of ttc turns out to correspond to a low fertility cycle where ovulation doesn't correspond with the lunar return. And interestingly enough, it turned out that as the lunar return got closer and closer to my menstrual cycle, I got a cycle shift and delayed ovulation just as this theory suggested will happen. Anyway. Maybe there's nothing to it, and I'm actually usually not into this kind of stuff, but I was sufficiently intrigued given the correlations I found to my own fertility cycle to post it here for other women who might be interested. "The Roman Goddess of measurement, numbers, calendars, and record-keeping; derived from the Moon-goddess as the inventor of numerical systems; measurer of time. It has been shown that calendar consciousness developed first in women because their natural body rhythms corresponded to observations of the moon.

Chinese women established a lunar calendar 3000 years ago. Mayan women understood the great Maya calendar was based on menstrual cycles. Romans called the calculation of time menstruation, meaning knowledge of the menses.

In Gaelic, menstruation and calendar are the same word."

Menstrual Cycles and The Moon ~
The Hidden Fertility Cycle: Pregnancy Success, Conception Timing and The Lunar Fertility Cycle

Many women feel that their fertility-menstrual cycles are interwoven with and possibly affected by the cycles of the Moon. Yet many women are not able to explain just exactly how or why this relationship exists. It is Intuition.

Both belief and skepticism abound. Papers have been written, numerous studies have concluded that the lunar-menstrual connection is non-existent. Skeptics state that since the average menstrual cycle does not match the 29.5 day lunar cycle- no relationship exists.

Yet, a high percentage of women do have 29-30 day menstrual cycles and the studies that have been made to observe the phenomenon of "lunar-menstrual phase locking" are certainly intriguing. The problem with many studies is the frequent conclusion that unless study group participants ovulate and menstruate during the times of the full moon and new moon - no verifiable relationship exists between the two cycles. The reality is that it's more complicated, and far more personal, than that.

Woman's Own Intuition about her fertility is appropriate in this matter.

When the menstrual cycle is charted alongside the lunar cycle, a third cycle becomes apparent. This Lunar Fertility Cycle is longer than either the menstrual cycle or the lunar cycle is alone and it is as unique as each woman's menstrual cycle is.

Not only does this third, "hidden" Lunar Fertility Cycle have its own periodicity (length) that is unique for each woman, this cycle may also be said to have "peaks" and "valleys". These peaks and valleys exhibit synchronicities that are worth examining:

The peaks of the Lunar Fertility Cycle frequently coincide with pregnancy among both the trying-to-conceive and the trying-to-avoid.

Among the trying-to-conceive, pregnancy may have been achieved after weeks, months or even years of effort. And this is where this "hidden" cycle becomes especially apparent for the Lunar Fertility Cycle may peak every three months or every three years, depending on the length and regularity of the woman's personal menstrual cycle. Among women who have regular menstrual cycles of 29-30 days, the effect of the Lunar Fertility Cycle upon the timing of pregnancy success is particularly noticeable.

The valleys of the Lunar Fertility Cycle consistently coincide with disturbances in the menstrual cycle. In addition, women typically have a harder time achieving pregnancy during the "valley" times of their Lunar Fertility Cycles.

Conception Timing and the Lunar Fertility Cycle

Again, the Lunar Fertility Cycle has its own periodicity (length) that is unique for each woman and the length of this cycle is established by the frequency with which the two cycles, the menstrual cycle and the lunar cycle, "peak" together.

What determines the "peak" point of each cycle?

When conception is the goal, the menstrual cycle can be said to peak at the moment of ovulation. Although conception likelihood is favored if intercourse occurs prior to ovulation, ovulation is the peak event in the body's monthly fertility cycle.

Where the lunar cycle is concerned the peak moment can be determined in varying ways. From an astronomical point of view the lunar cycle is generally considered to peak at the moment of the exact full moon and many women wonder if they are more fertile if they ovulate near the time of the full moon.

Where fertility and the Lunar Fertility Cycle are concerned, however, the full moon is not necessarily the peak of the cycle. For some women it does occur around the time of the full moon but this is not the case for all women. Rather, the peak may occur at any time throughout the 29.53 day lunar synodic cycle - yet this peak time remains consistent for each woman as it remains a fixed point within the recurring monthly lunar cycle.

What is the peak of the lunar cycle, then? At the heart of the Lunar Fertility Cycle is the "Lunar Return". Just as fertility specialists determined that conception is most likely during certain times of the menstrual cycle, we've found that women conceive during certain times of the Moon's synodic lunar cycle, too. Most pregnancies (that result in live birth) begin as a result of intercourse that took place near or during the Lunar Return.

The Lunar Return is as unique to every woman as her menstrual cycle is. However, it is established by the Moon's synodic cycle which is always 29.53 days in length for each and every woman- regardless of the length and regularity of her menstrual cycles. In other words, every woman will experience a Lunar Return time every 29.5 days- no matter what happens with her menstrual cycle.

It is the uniqueness of each woman's individual menstrual cycle in relationship with the Lunar Return cycle that creates her Lunar Fertility Cycle. The Lunar Fertility Cycle "peaks" when the Lunar Return coincides with ovulation. How often this occurs depends upon the length and regularity of the menstrual cycle.

In our Conception Timing, Birth Timing and the Moon page we'll define the Lunar Return and explain how we found out about it- but for now we'll discuss its effects, specifically as they pertain to fertility, pregnancy and the menstrual cycle.

The Timing of Pregnancy Success: Ovulation and Lunar Return Synchrony

The Lunar Return plays an interesting and synchronous role in the matter of birth timing and, it appears, the timing of conception itself. It is when we chart the Lunar Return with the menstrual cycle, and make note of the timing of pregnancy, that the Lunar Fertility Cycle presents itself.

Throughout the course of the Lunar Fertility Cycle, the Lunar Return will fall throughout the different times and phases of the menstrual cycle. This is because the Lunar Return occurs every 29.53 days- but every woman's menstrual cycle is different. Unless a woman has erratic menstrual cycles, however, the Lunar Return will display a gradual, predictable pattern with regard to the days it falls on- and how those days fall throughout the menstrual cycle.

Interestingly, among the trying-to-conceive, pregnancy success most often occurs during a month in which the Lunar Return falls near the time of ovulation. Of course, all women conceive near ovulation. But what is fascinating is that so many women who are trying to conceive do not become pregnant until the Lunar Return also falls at that time.

The table below provides an example.

Pregnancy was achieved in September 2004.

If you'll compare the Estimate Ovulation Dates with the Lunar Return Dates, you'll see that pregnancy was achieved during a month when the Lunar Return coincided or fell near the Ovulation Date.

This is something that we have seen time and time again.

The woman who wishes to conceive may become pregnant within 2 months...or it may take her 2 years. One of the patterns we've seen over the years is that the woman who achieves pregnancy within just a few short weeks has almost always decided to become pregnant at a time in her life when her Lunar Return is already beginning to coincide with her ovulation dates.

On the other hand, the woman who takes much longer to become pregnant has usually started trying to conceive at a time in her life when her Lunar Return is falling outside her estimate fertile times. Often, she does not have intercourse during the Lunar Return time until it coincides with her ovulation date, at which time she typically achieves pregnancy.

These effects are especially noticeable in the pregnancy timing of women whose menstrual cycles are 29-30 days in length. In these cases there are extended periods during which the Lunar Return falls during fertile time as well as extended periods during which it falls well outside the fertile time. Again, what is interesting is the frequency with which pregnancy success occurs when the Lunar Return coincides with ovulation and/or falls during the time in which the greatest efforts at conception are made.

Of course, not all women are trying to conceive and it is worthwhile to note patterns that occur in the timing of unwanted or unexpected pregnancy as well. In those cases of unexpected pregnancy in which conception took place earlier or later than was thought possible- the "surprise" conception was most often accompanied by the presence of the Lunar Return.

Menstrual Cycle Disruptions: Menstrual Cycle Change and the Lunar Return

Again, the Lunar Return will fall during all times of the menstrual cycle, doing so in a predictable, cyclical rhythm, as long as the menstrual cycle itself is fairly regular. The Lunar Return time, then, will sometimes coincide with menstruation itself.

Over the years we have noticed a very interesting pattern: When the Lunar Return begins to fall near menstruation, a woman usually experiences a change in the length of her menstrual cycle.

The change in the menstrual cycle is usually temporary (affecting one menstrual cycle only), and it can be subtle (just a few days) or it can be more noticeable (such as two weeks), but it happens almost every time.

It's almost as though the presence of the Lunar Return near the time of menstruation creates a disturbance in the menstrual cycle.

In addition, menstrual cycle changes are not uncommon during those time periods when the Lunar Return has been falling near ovulation and then begins its cyclical procession in which it begins to fall outside the time range of peak fertility. Frequently the menstrual cycle will shorten or lengthen temporarily, the result being that the Lunar Return is once again falling in "fertile time".

That the body so frequently alters its own menstrual cycle length in accordance with the lunar cycle suggests that the body synchronizes itself with the Moon and its cycles.

The woman who is trying to become pregnant should anticipate changes in her menstrual cycle (early or delayed ovulation) whenever 1.) the Lunar Return begins to fall out of sync with "fertile time" and 2.) the Lunar Return time approaches menstruation itself.

The Benefits of Charting Your Lunar Fertility Cycle:
Using the Lunar Fertility Cycle to Increase Your Chances of Conception

When you chart your Lunar Fertility Cycle you will know when you are most likely to conceive, that is, you will know which months are most favorable for pregnancy success. If your menstrual cycles are very regular, 29-30 days in length, knowledge of your Lunar Fertility Cycle can be especially enlightening.

If you have been trying, unsuccessfully, to conceive for some time now you will probably find that you are experiencing "menstrual-lunar locking" and your Lunar Return is not falling anywhere near the time of ovulation. (This does not mean that you cannot conceive and we certainly encourage you to continue with the fertility awareness and charting methods you have been using.) The good news is that those women who experience "menstrual-lunar locking" also experience extended time periods during which the Lunar Return coincides or falls near ovulation. During these months conception likelihood is highly favored.

You will know when to expect changes in your menstrual cycle, that is, early or delayed ovulation. If your menstrual cycles are somewhat irregular, knowledge of your Lunar Return/Conception Date can be very valuable as evidence suggests that the body frequently synchronizes its menstrual fertility cycle with the Lunar Return cycle. If you experience fertility signs that suggest you may be fertile sooner or later than you normally are, you'll probably find that your Lunar Return is falling near ovulation but not coinciding with it.

Finally, and most importantly, you will know your Lunar Return/Conception Date for each month. Unless the Lunar Return is falling very near or during menstruation, you should treat this date as a possible conception time and have intercourse accordingly. Not only do most pregnancies begin after intercourse that has taken place near or during the Lunar Return, very often women conceive during the Lunar Return time- even though they thought it was too early or too late in their menstrual cycles to be fertile time.

The news that a woman's fertile window is more unpredictable than previously thought is not surprising when the lunar cycles are considered. That there is a predictable lunar cycle of fertility is a benefit to women who have irregular menstrual cycles.

The Lunar Fertility Cycle certainly appears to be the Hidden Fertility Cycle. Not only does it appear to play a role in the timing of pregnancy, the body often alters its menstrual cycle length in accordance with this cycle.
