State's kids feeling effects of the economy
Michigan had about 108,000 children living in homes with no working parents in 2003 -- a figure that skyrocketed by 33,000 from 2000. "It's one of the biggest increases in the country," said Bill O'Hare, author of the KIDS Count Data Book, released today by the Annie E. Casey Foundation. The data also show a 14-percent increase in the number of Michigan children living in poverty.

Adoption hearing closed to public
A Wayne County Family Court Judge abruptly -- and possibly illegally -- closed a hearing Monday to determine whether 6-year-old Devin Alexander should be adopted by his foster family or his biological family.
