06.20.2005Philly

Got back from a trip to Philadelphia a few days ago. All I can say is wow. I loved it there, everyone was nice, the city was full of life and things to do, it was beautiful (other than I-95), and I had lots of fun. The trip wasn't long enough (it was only 3 days, 2 nights) but it was a nice break from the norm of summer. Not to mention it got me out of work for almost a week.

If you get the chance to visit Philly make sure to spend lots of time in south philly. South street was an excellent source of entertainment, food, shopping, and conversation. The Italian Market on 9th street was also a great place to stop by. And if you want the best cheese steak in Philly be sure and stop by Pat's (which is on 9th and Passyunk Ave). They were the original creators of the cheese steak sub and cheese fries and they are still run by the original family.

I took some pictures of Philadelphia, including the Italian market and the South Street Magic Gardens if you are interested.

06.11.2005Ush you husky!

Dear people who leave shit in movie theaters:

Apparently you were absent when they taught you to clean up after yourself in 3rd grade, and your parents have clearly failed. I would just like to say a few things to you, assuming you can read. Nobody wants to touch your used kleenex's so do us all a favor and pick them up. While you're at it, pick up that half finished popcorn and soda instead of pouring it on the floor. Oh, I almost forgot, don't forget to pickup the 50 kleenex's and 30 salt packets you got at the condiments table. I don't even know why we give out kleenex's, it seems to cause more of a mess than helping to clean anything up. Sometime's I find a stack about 2 feet high under people's chairs. Make's me wonder what the hell they were thinking when they grabbed that many..

PS: Why do you bring crap from outside the theater and leave it behind you? Does it really take THAT MUCH energy to pick up a wrapper and throw it in the trash can that is 2 feet from the exit? I mean damn, you have to walk out that way anyways.. why not just pick it up? If you're so lazy why not at least buy your crap from the theater and make me feel better, okay?

You wouldn't believe all the random stuff you can find in theaters after movies get out. There is this one usher at my theater who always manages to find lots of money, I believe his record is $13 in one theater. I never find money, no, I get the luck of finding stuff like girls bracelets and used kleenex's. Yes my life rocks!

06.06.2005Beethoven's 5th Symphony

This little revelation hit me in the face last night while I was watching "The Longest Day" (which I might add holds true to its name, being 180 minutes long) - a movie about operation overlord, or d-day. They were talking about how V stands for victory, and mentioned that the morse code for V is three dots and a dash (...-) which, coincidently or not, is exactly how the first five seconds of beethoven's fifth symphony starts out. "DAH DAH DAH DAAAAAAAH" Also very coincidently the roman numeral for five is V. During World War II the allied forces used this song to symbolize their "V for Victory." Ironically, Beethoven was german.

06.03.2005Popcorn and Housing

Well my job is definately in full swing now. It isn't so bad, especially when I get to do ushing, it's pretty fun and has a low stress level (plus you get lots of excercise from walking 8-9 hours a day). When you are ushing you have to take care of all the cleaning the theaters, bathrooms, and lobby need. You have to empty trash, sweep, etc. as well as doing movie checks (twice per movie, checking for sound and video problems).

Concession, however, is a bit different. When working concession people come in rushes (obviously, as movies start at certain times). There is either nobody there and you are bored (and are usually put to work doing pointless things, such as cleaning the countertops for the 5th time) or there are long lines and everything is in chaos. I swear if you look behind the stand after a rush it looks like we just had a fight with the popcorn maker. The ground has soda, popcorn, napkins, lids, straws, and popcorn kernels all over it and there are soda spills on the tables along with nacho sauce and butter (actually the "butter" at theaters is hydrogenated soybean oil, basically if you use it you are slowly killing yourself whether you are aware of it or not). While we are talking about killing yourself with theater food (not to mention that it kills your wallet), the large drinks we offer are 64 oz. Thats half a gallon. HALF A GALLON! I mean come on who drinks this much soda? There are like 800 calories (depending on ice and soda type) in a 64oz drink! Thats about 1/3 the amount of calories the normal person needs in a day. Think of all the sugar you are putting in your body. The average amount of sugar in a 12 oz. can of pop is 10 teaspoons. That means in a 64 oz cup you are drinking about 53.3 teaspoons of sugar.

I've learned some other interesting facts about movie theaters. They use paper towel for EVERYTHING. Need to clean the popcorn machine? Paper towel. The sink? Paper towel. The bathroom? Floor? Counter? Windows? Doors? Seats? You got it, paper towel. I swear the paper towel companies are making a mint off these places.

By the way, do I seriously look like Chris Farley? No. I wish kids would leave me alone. Today these three kids followed me around for like an hour (wtf?) calling me Chris Farley and asking for my autograph. Sometimes kids piss me off.

Anyways, I'm getting side tracked. So work is okay, but my school has screwed up yet again. It started last year when I requested my friend Eric as my room mate, and they ignored my request. After contacting them I was informed that there would be no changes made to the housing situation until October (we started in August) - so I was stuck with this random guy named Chris (who actually turned out to be a pretty nice, quiet guy - but thats not the point). This basically forced me to stay in my spot since me and Eric both were in different dorms with different room mates, we didn't want to move in the middle of the semester (good thing because we later found out that we wouldn't be able to switch until spring because they admitted too many freshman and had no room).

And now we are at present. I request Eric again, now on their new awesome leet program, and again I get assigned some random people. So I email them again and they tell me other people had the same problem and that I would go on a waiting list. Okay whatever, at least I got the building and floor I wanted right? (All my friends selected the same building/floor) WRONG! There was an "oversight" in housing and they assigned people to a floor that was reserved for a group of chinese exchange students. So they stick me in another dorm (cox) with another set of RANDOM room mates. Okay guys, did I not just tell you that you messed up by not giving me my requested room mate? This really stumps me here. How can they mess up so much? I am giving them good money and all they do is screw things up.

05.23.2005Work

Had my first day of work today, well, more like training. Um, I was hoping it wouldn't be that bad but I've heard working concession stand sucks by numerous people, and they are right, it sucks. We have to push for larger sizes and combos and theres all this crap to remember, plus I have like 8 managers and 5 lead workers (assistant managers) and a general manager, so that sucks. At least it wasn't that busy today, but my luck will soon change when I have to work 5 - close (12am-1am) on Friday, well that will just be FUN STUFF right there. I get $6.25 and hour, $.25 more per hour than Gamestop, but I'm wondering if it's worth it. So far I think I'd rather work at Gamestop again, but at least this will give me another thing to add to my resume. I guess once I get everything down it won't be so bad, just extremely boring when nobody is there, and extremely stressful when we get a huge rush of people. I'm not looking forward to Friday at all, ugh, I'm gonna take a walk to get my mind of things for awhile.
