Lodz Ghetto Commemorative Feature: 28-08-2005

The end of August 1944 saw the liquidation of Lodz Ghetto, the second largest, as well as the first and last ghetto created by the Germans in Poland during WWII. Hundreds of thousands of Jews were starved, worked and deported to their deaths from this infamous place. Alex Dafner presented this tribute to the murdered Jews of Lodz, amongst them members of his family.

12th August Commemorative Feature: 14-08-2005

On the 12th August 1952 following Stalin’s orders dozens of leading Yiddish writers, ‎actors and artists were murdered in the former Soviet Union. One of those most ‎admired writers and dramaturges was Dovid Bergelson and Yosl Winkler of ‎Melbourne pays tribute to the great writer as well as the other Jewish victims of the ‎murderous Stalin regime.‎

Treblinka Uprising Anniversary: 31-07-2005

The 2nd August, 1943 erupted the uprising in the notorious Treblinka death camp. ‎Some 800,000 people, mostly Jews were murdered at Treblinka. Chaim Sztayer of ‎Melbourne is one of the last survivors of the uprising at Treblinka and he spoke to ‎Alex Dafner about that time.‎

Vilnius/Vilna Yiddish Course Part#1: Danielle Charak: 27-07-2005

Vilnius or Vilna in Yiddish, was once known as the “Jerusalem of Lithuania”. ‎Former SBS Yiddish head and presenter Danielle Charak travelled to Vilna recently ‎and she spoke with Alex Dafner about her impressions of the city and the Yiddish ‎teacher’s course, in which she participated at Vilnius University.‎

Yiddish Polish National Theatre Feature: 17-07-2005

The Polish Yiddish National Theatre, founded after WWII by stage great Ida ‎Kaminska, (see left) and other fine surviving Yiddish actors, built upon a rich ‎theatrical tradition and continues to perform in Poland, albeit in a more modest form, ‎‎60 years later. Kaminska herself passed away in the USA 25 years ago.‎

Also known as the ‎‎“father of the Jewish Enlightenment”, the C18th German Jewish philosopher and ‎thinker transformed Jewish religious and civil life in Europe and throughout the ‎world. Popular and so called “Pulp/Trashy” Yiddish theatre, will next year celebrate 130 years, since Avraham Goldfaden began performing it in Yassi, Romania. The tradition of this form of Yiddish theatre continues in countries such as Romania, Poland, USA, Canada and Israel. Alex Dafner reads from Michal Ben Avraham’s historical overview of this genre of theatre amongst Jews and augments it with several recordings of the stars of this beloved theatrical form.

Alex Dafner speaks with academic and author Dr Leo Cooper about his new autobiographical book "The Long Road to the Lucky Country". Its a winding road that took him from pre-war Warsaw to the Soviet Union, back to Poland, Belgium and finally Sydney and Melbourne. Its also a journey of a quite remarkable individual who survived the many tribulations to become a scholar, academic and author. Sarah Gorby's singing of the refugee song, "A Jewish Child from Poland", accompanies the interview.

WW2 End 60th Anniversary: 08-05-2005

March 8th marked the 60th anniversary of the end of WWII. Alex Dafner outlines the events around that historic date and the enormous contribution Jewish soldiers, especially those in the Soviet Red Army, made to the defeat of Hitler and his once invincible forces. And one of the Jewish heroes of the battle of Stalingrad and the taking of Berlin, Yosif Feder recalls his and others memorable experiences. Holocaust Commemoration Program: 04-05-2005

A new monument to the 6 million Jews killed in the Holocaust was unveiled in Melbourne on the 15th March '05 (see photo). The commemoration for the 6 million Jewish victims of Nazism falls on the date of the start of the heroic Warsaw Ghetto Uprising on Khov-Zayen Nisn on the Jewish calendar and the 19th April on the common calendar. Regular contributor Yosl Winkler paid tribute to the victims of the Holocaust and heroic fighters of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising, accompanied by some well known songs that recall that horrific history in Poland, Lithuania and Russia.

ANZAC Day - 90th Anniversary: 24-04-2005

The 25th April 2005 marked the 90th anniversary of the ill-fated Gallipoli campaign at Suva Bay, Turkey, where Australian and New Zealand forces, known as the ANZACs, made their first impact and established Australia on the international scene. The tiny Jewish community at the time volunteered in greater numbers, proportionately, than the rest and one prominent local Jew, General Sir John Monash, a son of Prussian-Polish imigrants, became the chief commander of Australian and eventually all Allied forces on the Western Front. He is still regarded as one of the greatest Australians of all time. Alex Dafner recalls these events, as well as the heroic ANZAC cavalry charge at Beersheba, which led to the liberation of Jerusalem itself.

Passover Festival of Liberation: 22-04-2005

Passover is the ancient Jewish festival of liberation from slavery in Egypt. This year however, the traditional questions asked at the Seder table, also resonate with those linked to the 60th anniversary of liberation of the concentration camps in Europe. Tribute to Sh Anski with Songs: 27-03-2005

Sh Anski was the creator of the greatest Yiddish stage classic "The Dybuk", which depicted the spiritual and religious life of Eastern European Jewry. Sh Anski was also an ethnograph, folklore collector, poet, polemist and revolutionary and composed the hymns of the Jewish Labor Bund. Yosl Winkler pays tribute to Sh Anski and we hear a little of Anski's greatest compositions.

D-Day 6th June, 1944 - 60th Anniversary Feature: 14-03-2005

D-Day 60th Anniversary Feature presented on the 6th June 2004. Alex Dafner conveys a dramatised historical overview of the main events around D-day and its aftermath. The narrative ‎is interspersed with archival material, speeches by Gen Dwight ‎Eisenhauer, British Air Commadore Hellmore flying over the Channel, ‎BBC Presenter John Snagg, the satirical propaganda song “The Feuhrer’s ‎Face”, a German soldiers’ song about invading England “Ven Mir Farn..”, a Nazi rally and ‎Goebel’s urging the crowds “Sieg Heil!!” to Hitler. There are also original sounds of D-Day bombings, artillery fire and much more.

Yad Vashem Shoah Victims Web Database Reumites Sisters: 27-02-2005

The Yad-Vashem Holocaust Memorial, museum and research centre in Jerusalem ‎published on the Internet in Nov 2004 its database of some 3 million names of victims ‎which have been registered in its archives as murdered in the Holocaust. Since then ‎searchers from 162 countries have visited the website, some to see if they could trace ‎relatives, friends and acquaintances. A fortnight ago such a search of the Yad-‎Vashem’s database led to two sisters, who were separated in 1944 in Budapest and who ‎thought that the other had perished in the camps, to find each other. The classic 1939 Yiddish film "Tevye" ("Fiddler on the Roof") directed and starring Maurice Shwartz, has appeared on DVD. Shwartz' film of Sholem Aleichem's classic stories is the only foreign language film ever to be registered in the Library of Congress in the USA. Tribute to Rabbi S Rudzki Z: 28-12-2004

Rabbi Shlomo Rudzki Z'l who passed away on the 11th Dec 2004 was a highly, respected, admired and loved Rov and member of the Jewish community of Melbourne. He held many important positions including Rabbi of the Sth Caulfield Hebrew congregation and he was a longtime contributor to the SBS Yiddish Radio Friday programs with his learned commentaries about the Parshe of the week. He will be sadly and sorely missed and Alex Dafner pays tribute to Rabbi Rudzki and we hear one of his commentaries on the Parshe Vayigash.

The film "Amen" and Pope Pius XII: 19-11-2004

The important and powerful film “Amen” directed by the reknown Costa Garvas, is ‎showing as part of the Festival of Jewish Cinema. It tells the story of the SS Officer ‎Kurt Gerstein, the expert on Zyklon-B, which was used in the gas chambers to kill ‎millions of people in WWII. A devoted Christian, Gerstein tried to get the Church and ‎Pope Pius XII to condemn the mass murder of Jews, Gypsies and others in the ‎concentration camps in Poland. As history and this film record, the Vatican and the ‎Pope remained silent and even helped the Nazi henchmen escape after the war. Alex ‎Dafner saw the film “Amen” and recalled other evidence disovered against the Pontif who has ‎been called “Hitler’s Pope” and whom the Vatican is still trying to beatify as a Saint.‎

Two WWII Diaries Stir Holland: 07-11-2004

Two diaries written during WWII by young Jewish women who died in the Holocaust, recently stirred up controversy and regret in Holland. The world reknown diarist Anna Frank was voted amongst the 10 greatest Dutch, but she was a Jewish German refugee and never received Dutch citizenship. She and most of her family died in the Nazi concentration camps stateless persons. Helga Deen was an 18 year old Dutch citizen whose diary from the Vught transit camp stirred great pity and regret in Holland recently, 61 years after her death in Sobibor, when her recently discovered diary went on display the 30th October in Tilburg.

"Brundibar" Opera of Thereisenstadt Staged in Melbourne: 03-11-2004

The children's opera "Brundibar", composed by Hans Krasa was first performed at the infamous transit concentration camp of Terezin during WWII. It was performed 55 times by children at the camp and used by the Nazi SS as part of the propaganda, to show the Red Cross and others, how well the Jews were treated there. The opera will now be staged in Melbourne with 40 children participating. Alex Dafner spoke with one of the original cast members of the production of "Brundibar" in Terezin, Peter Gaspar, then 7 years old and one of only 100 children out of 15,000 who survived Terezin and the Holocaust. Daniele Kemp of the French program also spoke with the opera's director Richard Gill and gratefully provided his comments on the current production.

The history of Jewish participation in the Olympics is both tragic and triumphant. ‎Whilst we remember Berlin 1936 and Munich 1972, we also should remember many ‎of the other more fortuitous games for Jewish and Israeli competitors. Sydney Yiddish Conference : 14-07-2004

"Yiddish Upside Down - In the Southern Hemisphere" was the catchy title of a mostly serious inaugurial conference organised by lecturer Dr Jennifer Dowling of Sydney University's Yiddish Studies Dept (see: http://www.arts.usyd.edu.au/departs/hebrew/yiddish.html) and the Australian Friends of Yiddish and held at Sydney's Mandelbaum House over the 11th-13th July, 2004. Julian Hofman was a friend and musical collaborator with the great Yiddish song writer Mordechai Gebirtig in Krakow. Stalingrad Hero Yosif Feder: סטאלינגראדער העלד יוסף פעדער: 04-02-2004

The 2nd February 1943 marks the historic capitulation of the German forces at Stalingrad and the beginning of the end of the Nazi regime. Amongst the many heroes of that titanic struggle known as the Battle of Stalingrad was the Jewish Red Army officer Yosif Feder. Yosl Birshteyn E"h : יוסל בירשטיין ע"ה: 04-01-2004

Yosl Birshteyn who died in Jerusalem last week was a bi-lingual Yiddish-Hebrew writer with a sharp eye and mind and was a keen observer of the lives of ordinary Jews. In the 1940`s he lived in Melbourne and served in the Australian army during the war. He emigrated to Israel in 1949 and settled on a kibbutz where he worked as a shepherd for many years. He published 17 books and his novels and short stories were well received in Israel and around the Jewish world. Adam Gruzman in Jerusalem interviewed Yosl Birshteyn after his book of short stories "On the Streets of Jerusalem" was published in the mid `80`s. At the end we also hear the author read two of his short stories from that book.(åpprox 13mins 36secs)

Melbourne Cup Feature מעלבורנע בעכער פערד-געיעג: 05-11-2003

The first Tuesday in November has since 1861 been a holiday in Melbourne, a day dedicated to horse racing and the Melbourne Cup race in particular. Local Jews call this holiday jokingly “Hag Hasusim”, the “Holy Day of the Horses”. But, as the erudite Yiddish-Polish poet, writer and essayist Melekh Ravitch wrote in his epic poem: “On Melbourne’s Streets on the Day of the Great Horse Race”, written in Melbourne in 1937, there is much more to this day than meets the eye of the outsider. Ravitch’s poem praises the good hearted Aussies and their obsessive love of horses and horse racing, whilst warning them of the looming dangers of the "Apocalyptic Horsemen", who are already galloping, coming from over the seas from more troubled parts of the world and wanting to destroy their joy. Burned Warsaw Ghetto Torah Scroll:פארברענטע ספר-תורה פון ווארשעווער געטא : 02-05-2003

Ivor Leiser lost most of his large family in the Holocaust in Poland. He had the good fortune to migrate to Australia before the war and served as a bombardier in the RAAF in Borneo. In the 1980s he travelled to Warsaw where he came across part of a singed Sefer-Torah scroll, which was found in the ruins of a building in the Warsaw Ghetto, which was burned down by the Nazis in May 1943. After much effort he brought the Sefer-Torah to Australia and on the 25th April 2003 presented it to the Melbourne Holocaust Centre and Museum, where it has found its resting place as part of the Resistance 1943 Exhibition. Shtik: The Rabbinate and Mixed Marriages: דער ראבינאט און געמישטע חתונות: 04-04-2003

Ida Lustig was an actress, entertainer and communal activist born in Czerkase, Ukraine. After the war she migrated to Melbourne and continued her stage appearances here, until her illness and death a year ago. Perhaps the highlight of her long career in Poland and Australia came when she played opposite the comic genius Shimon Dzigan in the early 1960’s. Here is a recording of that “shtik” about the Rabinnical Court and their stand on "mixed marriages and kosher and non-kosher bastards", amongst others... a very “hot” issue to this very day in Israel and other Jewish communities throughout the world.
