Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation is one of the nation's preeminent
independent, nonprofit organi zations merging scientific knowledge and proven
practice to create solutions that improve the health, safety and well-being
of individuals, communities, nations, and the world.
Pacific Institute has significant national presence in the area of prevention with funded
research projects at many of its centers on prevention, treatment, and policy research.
Pacific Institute scientists and practitioners continually focus on the design and
implementation of complex program evaluation strategies and the conduct of research
related to health and social issues, including criminal justice.
Pacific Institute practitioners and scientists provide training and technical assistance in
many health-related areas to states and communities that are attempting to mitigate the
effects of alcohol and other drug abuse.
Pacific Institute houses one of the world's leading teams studying the costs of illness and
injury and the cost effectiveness of health systems organization and preventive interventions.
Our studies of medical spending by diagnosis grouping are regularly cited and updated.
The Institute has developed computer-modeling tools to analyze health and
social issues. The alcohol computer model, SimCom, measures alcohol
consumption and related problems as they respond to alcohol policy interventions.
The SimSmoke model measures the effects of price interventions (taxes) and youth access
policies on tobacco consumption and related mortality.
Pacific Institute has always maintained a leadership role by seeking to advance knowledge,
technology and practice in alcohol and other drug prevention, treatment, social policy, health
and safety. The Institute continues to add new areas of exploration.
Pacific Institute has been closely identified with research, evaluation, and prevention of
alcohol abuse and related health and social issues. The Prevention Research Center in
Berkeley, CA., is one of fifteen centers sponsored by the National Institute on Alcohol
Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA). Pacific Institute is also the designated technical assistance
contractor for the major national initiative with the Office of Juvenile Justice and
Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) for reducing underage drinking.
Pacific Institute was founded to develop and disseminate some of the earliest drug prevention
strategies and has continued to provide national and international leadership, both in
knowledge development and in the translation of this knowledge into public policy and
programmatic strategies.
The focus of Pacific Institute's work, historically, has been on individual and
social problems associated with the use of alcohol and other drugs. This focus
has led to research into related behaviors with health implications, including
driving under the influence, intentional and unintentional injury, occupational
health and safety, and unsafe sexual practices.
Ongoing Pacific Institute projects investigate the effectiveness of primary prevention
as it relates to physical injuries and violence.
Pacific Institute performs research and development in the areas of traffic safety and the
relationship of alcohol and other drug use to traffic safety.
The Institute maintains a commitment to active involvement in both the scientific
and policy-making communities for the advancement of education. Institute scholars
regularly prepare comprehensive scientific reviews, policy position
papers, and methodological analyses on various educational issues.
Pacific Institute continues to develop research on the subject of tobacco as it affects
individual and public health. We have also developed a research and technical assistance
program in smoking prevention.
The mission of the IT Department is to unite information systems and technology with
the goals of the Institute and its work.
