what
the press has to say |
Mad Dog Duane Peters
is back with his 5th batch of old and new punk bands. We don't
play the age card here, so allow me to just list my favorites
off this record: Epoxies, River Boat Gamblers (a fantastic Dallas
punk band with a gritty, drunk sound), The Skulls (one of LA's
first punk bands), New York's Dead Boys wannabes the Black Halos,
and Scandinavian gay porn death metal purveyors Turbonegro covering
David Bowie's seminal "Suffragette City." Like a good
cover, it sounds familiar and totally alien at the same time.
30 songs, some good new acts and it's cheap! - Sid Arthur / Culture Bunker |
A pretty good sampler
of the current punk scene, featuring bands like the Briefs, the
Briggs, Street Dogs, Union 13, the Hunns and more. While this
is actually good stuff, an official call out must be made. German
band the Revolvers do a song called "No Clash Reunion",
and before anyone gets into it, they should know that Brazilian
punk band the Blind Pigs did "No Pistols Reunion" back
in '97 or so. Still, this disc is worth having for the people
out there who refuse to accept that there aren't any good punk
bands coming out anymore. - Bob Trendy / Altercation Magazine |
A street punk heavy
compilation of rare tracks, including a couple of killer songs.
So if you want to hear Die Hunns do Van Halen and Turbonegro
do Bowie and Duane Peters do what he's done for the last century,
skar yourself. - Roctober |
If you like your
punk rock, it's hard to go wrong here. Duane Peters knows how
to pick 'em, and this disc contains 30 tracks of kick ass shit,
all the way from the Briefs to Turbonegro. Old skars means that
some of these tracks, such as the Adicts' "Steamroller",
are quite old, but others are obviously new. The only one I was
tempted to skip was a number by the Ducky Boys, which sounded
disgustingly radio-friendly. What happened? I used to love that
band! But I won't whine about one track when the other 29 are
damn good. My favourites include the Lizzies, Riverboat Gamblers,
U.S. Bombs, Black Halos, Amazombies, the Worthless, the District,
Duane Peters Gunfight - oh, hell, I'd have to list most of them.
One thing I don't understand is why Die Hunns covered "Ain't
Talkin' About Love", and Turbonegro covered "Suffragette
City". Sure, those songs are both guilty pleasures of mine,
but I'd never admit it publicly. Wait a minute, I just did. D'oh!

The fifth installment
of the 'Old Skars And Upstarts' compilation series is the best
in the series to date. Duane Peters, the former U.S. Bombs frontman,
has compiled the perfect mix of unsigned or unknown artists with
big name bands to make this album a hit from start to finish.
All 30 tracks are rare or unreleased tracks from such artists
as Turbonegro, U.S. Bombs, Hollow Points, The Addicts, Epoxies,
and many more. With a DIY feel and a great tracklist this album
is an ideal punk compilation for novice and hardcore fans alike.
Don't be surprised if you find a few more favorite bands after
listening to this compilation. I know I did. - Josh / EpunkZine |
This series of compilations
always has had some tremendous bands on it; this iteration has
pretty much a half/half mix of famous/up and coming bands. The
compilation's first hit really comes in Die Hunns' version of
the Van Halen classic "Ain't Talkin' 'bout Love". Where
the cover does not really bring much in the way of a re-tooled
sound to the track, the energy present on the original song is
maintained for this cover. Coming out of virtually nowhere, The
Bones make the next strong case during their "Not A Love
Song". The rich instrumentation and smart arrangements during
the track only bolster the smooth vocals, and The Bones have
a poppy (but not in the vein of Blink 182) sounding punk rock
track. Surprisingly enough, it is another cover that really will
get individuals' toes tapping; Turbonegro have surprisingly allowed
their version of David Bowie's "Suffragette City" to
find its way onto this track. This time, unlike Die Hunns, Turbonegro's
version tackles the original and only uses some of the vocal
inflections of the original, while making the rest of the track
theirs. The Black Halos use multiple harmonies, coupled with
buzzing guitar lines to make a compelling and bouncy punk track,
while the River Boat Gamblers battle a slightly fuzzy recording
to bring forth their rich, interesting combination (think Welt
meets "At The Library"-era Green Day). With thirty
tracks, the fact is that even if "Old Skars and Upstarts"
had twenty bum tracks (which is most definitely not the case),
the quality of the remaining songs would make the price of this
disc worth it. Blood For Blood really push the disc in a bold
new direction; in their "Hanging On The Corner", the
band mixes equal parts Cali-punk, NY "tough" hardcore
and even the slightest amount of melodic "post-hardcore"
(read: emo). Finishing up the discs with a cover of Circle Jerks
("Wild in the Streets"), The Kings of Nuthin' truss
up the track in much of the same way as Alice Donut's cover of
Black Sabbath's "War Pigs"; the Western-sounding plinking
of the piano mixes well with the horn section. This CD is excellent
in the sense that it will lure individuals in with tracks from
major acts (like The Epoxies, The Adicts, and Roger Miret), but
intersperse those tracks with a number of "upstarts"
that often even outstrip the efforts of established bands on
this disc. - Neufutur |
Old Skars And Upstarts
vedette, on retrouve ROGER MIRET AND THE DISASTERS qui nous chante
Lower East Side, une pièce punk relax sans prétention
qui ressemble à du RANCID mais en plus molo. On a aussi
des chansons de THE ADDICTS (Steamroller), BLOOD FOR BLOOD (Hanging
On The Corner) et U.S. BOMBS (He's The Man).

Once again Punk/Skate
legend and Disaster Records head-honcho Duane Peters has put
together a compilation package for your listening pleasure. This
is the fifth volume in the OS&U series, and the second I've
gotten my hands on. I thought last year's was pretty cool, but
I think this year's manages to top it just a little. Once again
Duane has hand picked some killer tracks (with a handful of course
coming from bands that he's involved with). This time out he
has expanded the number of tracks to a nice round 30, and the
running time stretches out to 76:50! So you are pretty much guaran-fuckin-teed
to get your money's worth here. Now, as always, we'll all have
different favourite tracks and bands here, but there are a few
I gotta mention. First of all, if you're a die-hard Turbonegro
fan like myself, then hearing them do a cover of Bowie's "Suffragette
City" will alone be worth the price of admission! This was
of course released on another comp back in 2000 (Pushing Scandinavian
Rock to the Man), but that was an expensive import, and this
ain't. Moving on, we have a killer track from personal faves
The Deep Eynde, and another from The Duane Peters Gunfight. Incidentally,
the track from TDPG, "Blow My Brains", sounds remarkably
like a lost Dictators song (which is a good thing). There were
a couple here that didn't raise my pole (if ya know what I mean),
but the score was greatly weighted in favour of the hits over
the misses. Excellent stuff! My only criticism, which is carried
over from last year's review, is that we need a nice fat booklet
to go with this disc. I'd love to read a small bio or whatever
on each of these bands, and find out if a particular song is
unreleased or not. (and if not, where did it originally appear??)
Other than that, you can't really lose here. - Jeff Urotsukodji / Sunset

Well here it is!
The fifth collection in the series that unites old timers with
new blood through 30 tracks of punk, hardcore and rock n, roll.
Each instalment seems to get more and more varied sound-wise
and band-wise and that,s a great thing because it keeps the whole
thing fresh and exciting. If there,s too many similar bands all
back-t-back it becomes an indistinguishable blur but when you
have a punk rock backed by a rock n, roll band backed by a hardcore
band it adds an unpredictable element to the comp and that keeps
it stimulating. Also, there,s a lot of bands on here that have
a really interesting sound to begin with like THE KINGS OF NUTHIN,,
THE DISTRICT, TURBO NEGRO, EPOXIES (covering GG!!), HOLLOW POINTS,
THE STITCHES, DIE HUNNS, THE BRIEFS, THE DEEP EYNDE, MAD SIN,
PRIMA DONNAall these bands are pretty unique and instantly recognisable
adding to the diversity. I think that Disaster just keeps getting
stronger and stronger and expanding it,s sound, especially with
bands like DARLINGTON, HOLLOW POINTS, INSAINTS and CIVETthis
series of compilation really illustrates that and I love each
volume of it, but if you look at each one individually, you can
see the progression right there, you can see Disaster expanding
and developing and constantly keeping things invigorating. Other
bands on this volume include BLACK HALOS, DUCKY BOYS, THE WORTHLESS,
THE SKULLS, BLOOD FOR BLOOD, ROGER MIRET AND THE DISASTERS, THE
ORPHANS, ANGEL CITY OUTCASTS, THE LIZZIES, THE BONES, U.S. BOMBS,
AMAZOMBIES, THE DUANE PETERS GUNFIGHT, STREET DOGS, THE ADDICTS,
BAD LIEUTENANTS, RIVER BOAT GAMBLERS, and R.X. SONgreat collection
again and as always cool artwork and this time it,s presented
in a digipak style which I always like! This is one of the only
compilation series that I genuinely look forward to the next
one coming out, it never fails to impress me and I can,t wait
for the 2006 instalment already. - Marco / NFT

From our friends
at Disaster Records comes the latest edition of the Old Skars
and Upstarts compilation disc! Put together by Duane Peters,
if you're a fan of Punk Rock you're going to really enjoy this
one. It features tracks from icons like US Bombs, The Addicts
and Ducky Boys. Along side some newer bands like The Hollow Points,
Civit and Kings of Nuthin', just to name a few. Its awesome to
have a disc that has stuff from the bands you grew up with along
side with those who may be a bit newer to your ears. You'll find
yourself feeling the classics all over again while being turned
on to some killer new shit! - Sameerah / Ectomag |
How can I possibly
adequately describe the sheer amazing qualities of this raucously
grand CD? Truth be told, I fuckin' can't! There are no words
whatsoever that can serve justice to the spectacular nature of
the sounds contained herein. Legendary skateboard kamikaze Duane
Peters has once again picked the cream of today's Punk Rock crop
and packaged it all together into the latest, flesh-shredding
edition of Old Skars & Upstarts (the fifth installment, to
be exact). Without further verbose ado and adjective-strewn grandstanding,
I'd like to now present the entire rundown of this particular
collection from start to finish (because each band is definitely
worth mentioning): Bad Lieutnants, Die Hunns, Briefs, Prima Donna,
The Bones, Angel City Outcasts, Turbo Negro, Black Halos, Epoxies,
The Lizzies, Ducky Boys, U.S. Bombs, The District, Amazombies,
Mad Sin, Street Dogs, River Boat Gamblers, The Deep Eynde, The
Duane Peters Gunfight, Civet, The Addicts, The Worthless, The
Skulls, Hollow Points, Blood For Blood, Roger Miret & The
Disasters, The Stitches, The Orphans, R.X. Son, and The Kings
Of Nuthin'. One hell of an impressive roster, huh! If there were
a Cannes Festival for Punk Rock compilations, Old Skars &
Upstarts 505 would undoubtedly take top honors as far as I'm
concerned. You ain't even close to being punk until ya give this
a listen! - Moser / Under

Perhaps it's simply
my growing age, but each time I get another one of Duane Peters'
samplers of rarities and unreleased tracks, I'm surprised to
hear there is still so much vitality in the punk underground.
After punk's commercial uprisings in the late '70s, and again
in the MTV age, it's easy to forget that the music is still living
as a commercial outcast in the underground. But devoted old-timers
and newbies alike can be heard bashing out three-chord rock 'n'
roll with various degrees of traditional talent and plenty of
anti-authoritarian spunk. Peters' band Die Hunns bridges the
late '70s to today with a growling cover of Van Halen's "Ain't
Talkin' 'Bout Love," that retains the original's punk-edged-metal
attitude. A good deal of this collection is winningly indebted
to New York and UK punk variations of the late '70s, including
straight ahead influences from standard bearers like The Clash
and Buzzcocks (and earlier rock influences like The Who), but
also sounds of garage, glam, pub-rock and new-wave. The disc
is evenly split between punk-rock with melodies and lyrics and
speedier-core that's more spat than sung. Highlight include Briefs'
"Human Thermometer" and the punk David Bowie styled
"Baby Black and Blue" by The Lizzies. U.S. Bombs "He's
the Man" digs into the classic "Have Love, Will Travel"
riff for a tune that should be the next Austin Powers' theme.
Thirty (30!) cuts means a lot of great music for punk rock lovers
of every stripe. - Eli Messinger / Amazon.com |
Old Skars and Upstarts
505 is the latest comp put together by the Master of Disaster
Duane Peters. I own all of them and all of them rank in my top
10 all time best cd list. This new one, "the 505 edition"
is no exception. It begins with the "Bad Lieutnants"
doing 'Arizona Love' that kind of sets the pace for an in your
face dose of punk rock from around the globe. The Hunns cover
the classic VH track "Ain't Talkin' bout Love" and
not only do it justice but actually make it better with Duane
and Corey trading off on vocals throughout. AWESOME stuff! The
Lizzies (feat. Corey) contribute "Baby Black and Blue".
I can't wait to hear some more from this band. None of the bands
on this cd disappoint. Instead they all give you a sense that
punk rock is alive and well despite all the CRAP being thrown
at everyone that is labeled "punk". Mr. Peters knows
good music period. Now, as if this incredible comp cd isn't enough,
he has organized a tour featuring
a lot of the bands on this edition of Old Skars. - Jeff Jackson
