AUSTIN COUNTY

Named for Stephen F. Austin (1793-1836), "Father of Texas"
County Seat: Bellville   Area: 663 square miles   Pop. (2000): 23,590

In preparation for the 150th anniversary celebration of the establishment of Austin County, Jim Bishop, chairman of the Austin County Historical Commission, designed the flag that the Commissioners' Court adopted on 20 April 1987 to represent the county. The flag was first officially hoisted on 1 June 1987 at the County Courthouse. A unique aspect of this flag is that the names of the county's communities, or an appropriate motto, may be added in white lettering to the blue stripe.
