Why I'm Running

I believe that an enlightened government has a role to play in helping to make all of our lives better. I believe that each of us has a stake in our neighbor’s dreams and struggles as well as our own. I believe in the American Dream, and want to work to put it within reach of more people here in Massachusetts. read more

LATEST FROM THE CAMPAIGN

Statement on Charles Baker

I know Charles Baker and he is a superb professional and an active community leader, both in his hometown of Swampscott and throughout the Boston area.

I was looking forward to debating health care policy with him in this Governor’s race. He is one of our state’s top health care policy experts and has had great success dealing with the challenges of our present system.

Since I became a candidate, I have met with dozens of health care specialists who see problems with the system, and to a person they have great respect for Baker’s contributions People I talk to around the state are deeply concerned about the care they get, but they also see this as a time of great opportunity. We can, through the work of people like Baker, bring those half million people who live on the edge the health care that they deserve.

Voting Rights Act - New Democracy Coalition
August 3, 2005

The young people so many of you here are trying to reach are not just voters. Think of them fully as tomorrow’s citizens. Ask them to take a chance on what this national community ought to be, not just what it is. because while we debate the abstract merits of color blindness, or this or that civil rights remedy, while we parse the language, tone and reasoning of supreme court opinions, there are millions of children all over this nation who are left out and left back -- who will never become doctors or lawyers or teachers or police officers or much else -- who cannot even imagine coming into a hall like this one -- whose latent idealism will never be freed to grow into compassion and action -- because there was no teacher, no friend, no one like you, who by action or example, quietly inspired them; showed them how to look up, not down; helped them to see their stake in their own and their neighbors dreams; touched a life in some private, but powerful way, and gave someone else a reason to hope. . . .read more

Romney's Cynicism on Display
Op-ed by Deval Patrick from the Worcester Telegram and Gazette
July 26, 2005

Yesterday, Governor Romney explained his decision to veto the “emergency contraception bill.” That bill would require hospitals to make emergency contraception – an FDA approved method of birth control – available to women who have been raped and allow pharmacists to enter into an agreement with doctors to dispense the drug. The measured and thoughtful tone of the Governor’s reasoning masks the flaws in his argument and the cynicism of his veto.

First, the Governor is wrong on the science. The so-called “morning after” pill prevents pregnancy. It has nothing to do with abortion. Medical consensus holds that pregnancy begins when the fertilized egg is implanted in the womb. Without implantation, it cannot naturally survive. The “morning after” pill prevents implantation, as well as ovulation and fertilization, just like other birth control medicines. That is precisely why the FDA has defined the medication as birth control, not an abortion drug. . .read more

Young energy fuels Patrick's campaign
The Boston Herald
By Wayne Woodlief
July 14, 2005

The secret weapon of Deval Patrick's campaign for governor is the energy and enthusiasm of 27 young interns from across America who mix hard work and high spirits as they try to make history in Massachusetts.

You sense the mood the minute you enter the headquarters of the state's first-ever serious black candidate for governor, in a sub-basement off Milk Street in downtown Boston. A dozen young people, in their 20s or late teens, are clustered around a long table, typing furiously on laptops, talking on telephones and other building-block chores. Others are in the street handing out leaflets. . .read more
