1. How do you find who all those songs are by? Some of the songs I just know because they've crossed my path
somewhere along the way. But for most of them, especially the funk
songs, I have to look them up on the Internet. In this respect, Google
is your best friend. I start by listening to the track trying to pick
out a few of the lyrics. Once I find a piece I would consider unique, a
piece that is unlikely to occur in another song, I search Google with
something like "lyrics blah blah blah", where of course "blah blah
blah" is the lyrics of the song.
Other times I know who the artist is because I recognize their voice,
but I don't know the title of the song. For instance Redman and K-Solo have a song
together that I knew I'd heard but I couldn't recall the name. A quick
googling with Redman K-Solo shows a couple results with a title
that appears to
be "Its Like That (My Big Brother)".
Just listening to the lyrics, most hip-hop artists put their name or
the name of their crew in there somewhere, so being quick on the uptake
and searching for that name and a phrase in the hook which could be the
title can lead to a page referencing that title. That will probably be
a review of the single or maybe a for-sale listing. You just have to
guess, using a bit of musical common sense, which I know isn't always
that common. Don't send me emails with that joke :)
For funk songs, its generally the same, except I would search with Funk, and whatever else I can glean
from the lyrics of the song. Funk can be pretty hit or miss, because
its not as well documented on the web. Sites like Funk45.com, allmusic.com, and the-breaks.com can
come in pretty
handy. Sites where you can listen to tracks like allmusic.com, amazon.com, and undergroundhiphop.com
are
especially useful.
Its also pretty likely that WeFunk has played the song again in a show
with a playlist, so a
search of WeFunk's site can bear bountiful fruits of verification
too.
2. What are those Snippets in the
playlists about?
There are a lot of tracks that I just couldn't identify by research.
These are generally funk tracks with little or no vocals on them, since
I couldn't figure out a possible name for them. There are also some hip
hop tracks that I couldn't find lyrics for.
I have put the snippets there in the hope that someone will be able to
listen to the track and remember what the name and/or artist for it is.
Its a lot easier to listen to a short MP3 file on the WFPP than
to try to listen to an entire WeFunk show, looking for the spot where a
question mark occurred on a playlist.
So if you listen to a snippet and you know what the name of the track
is, please email me.
