MISSION DATA FOR ALL MISSIONS TO MIR
1986 to 2001
NEWLY UPDATED JULY 29, 2002
The following table ("Flight Log") contains statistics
for all missions to the Soviet/Russian Mir space station.
If you are interested in finding when a particular mission
was launched, or who was on a mission, or when a spacecraft docked to the
station, this is the place to find it.
I've listed each mission to Mir in sequential order. As
you read the table from left to right, you will see the names of particular
missions to Mir, listed chronologically. If you are interested in the mission
of, say, Soyuz T-15, then simply look under the column heading of Soyuz
T-15 and read all the rows below that heading.
SOME GENERAL STATISTICS ABOUT MIR
The development of Mir was officially approved by the
Soviet government in 1976
The core module was launched in February 1986
The first crew (Kizim and Solovyev) reached the station
in March 1986
The original lifetime of the station was supposed to be
5 years.
It actually operated for 15 years (between 1986 and 2001).
Six large modules were attached to the Mir core between
1987 and 1996. These were:
1) Kvant (linked up in April 1987)
2) Kvant-2 (in December 1989)
3) Kristall (in June 1990)
4) Spektr (in June 1995)
5) Docking Module (SO) (in November 1995)
6) Priroda (in April 1996)
The maximum mass of Mir, all the modules, plus two visiting ships, was about 140 tons.
Altogether, 28 "Main Expeditions" worked aboard Mir. These main expeditions were visited by many short visiting crews.
A total of 104 men and visited Mir including 42 Soviet
or Russian citizens.
The remainder were split between 44 Americans, 5 French,
3 from the European Space Agency, 2 Germans, and one each from Syria, Bulgaria,
Afghanistan, Japan, the United Kingdom, Austria, Slovakia, and Canada.
Between 1994 and 1998, the Russians and NASA jointly conducted
the Shuttle-Mir program which included 9 dockings between the Mir complex
and the American Space Shuttle.
Nine American astronauts spend long periods about Mir.
The longest time spent in space on a single mission to Mir was by Russian cosmonaut Valeriy Polyakov who spent 438 days in space between January 1994 and March 1995. This is the world duration record for the longest space mission in history.
The most time spent in space on a mission to Mir (over three separate missions) was 748 days by Russian cosmonaut Sergey Avdeyev.
The longest time spent by an American on Mir was 188 days by NASA astronaut Shannon Lucid.
The entire Mir complex was deorbited on 23 March 2002.
EXPLANATION FOR HEADINGS IN TABLE
| FLIGHT | This is the official mission
designation.
In cases of manned/piloted missions to Mir, I've also listed a second designation of the type "EO." "EO" stands for "Main Expedition" in Russian. Thus EO-4 is the "Fourth Main Expedition to Mir." |
| CLASS | This is the class of spacecraft, as known internally by the producers of the spacecraft. |
| PRODUCTION INDEX | This is the manufacturing index of the type of spacecraft, a confusing number-letter-number system that was classified until about the early 1990s. |
| SERIAL NO. | This is the serial number (or factory production number) of the spacecraft used to identify a particular vehicle. |
| LAUNCH DATE / TIME | This time is given in Universal Time (i.e., Greenwich Mean Time) |
| LAUNCH VEHICLE | This is the designation
of the launch vehicle used.
8K82K = (otherwise known as the) Proton-K
|
| LAUNCH SITE | This is the specific (pad)
location at the Baykonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.
e.g. "1/5" means that the spacecraft was launched from "launch unit 5" at "site 1" at the Baykonur Cosmodrome. The Baykonur Cosmodrome was originally divided up into "sites," only some of which actually had launch pads. |
| PRIME CREW | This is given with ages on the day of launch |
| BACKUP CREW | This is given where applicable |
| DOCKING DATE / TIME | These times are shown in Universal Time |
| UNDOCKING DATE / TIME | These times are shown in Universal Time |
| LANDING DATE / TIME | These times are shown
in Universal Time and refer to the time when the Soyuz crew descent module
impacted on land.
In the case of Progress spacecraft (which burned up in the Earth's atmosphere), the time shown is the time of deorbit burn initiation. If two date/times are given, the second one indicates the landing time of the Raduga capsule |
| CREW DURATION | This is each crea member's launch-to-landing time. |
| VEHICLE DURATION | This is the length of space mission for the listed spacecraft (i.e., independent of the crew) |
| Extra-Vehicular Activities (EVAs) | This are lists of EVAs carried out by crewmembers launched in listed spacecraft |
